I am glad I didn't have to grab my gun off the night stand tonight.
the story:
I live in an old part of town in Mesa, AZ, my house has an alley way behind it, which has railroad tracks on the other side. I frequently see vagrants and unsavory characters heads bobing along my back fence though l never see them stop to take a look.
Well tonight was different. We have our windows open at night right now to enjoy the cool air and help the house cool down. Unable to wind down and turn my brain off, I was still awake later than I usually am. And As I was laying in bed a few minutes ago reading another thread after watching the pro gun citizen wreck the city council meeting (awesome BTW), I heard foot steps in the alley way and a lot of fowl language. two males were back there and had apparently stopped. Through the window I saw their heads poking over my fence. I heard them talking about "this one", using the "F" word or "S" word about every other word. then I heard my dog moving around. and then one saying "damn that's a pitbull" (he's not a pitbull) "I'm not F-ing with no pitbull" (he's a Boerboel actually) "no F-ing way man" more broken english mixed with the F word and they shuffled away.

Little did they know my "pitbull" would have been the least of their troubles if they picked my house, but I am grateful it didnt come to that.
It's Ironic that happened just after being on the other thread but it sure hit home. If they HAD decided to mess with my dog, I am sure glad I am well armed. My girls are precious to me and I would fight till my last breathe for them.
It's astounding that some people would limit my ability to do so, and decrease my odds of success.

To get to our house after dark... Driving over the stock guard you are going to be met by a Charolais bull that will only allow you to pass if you give him a certain treat. Get out of your vehicle without and you have to deal with a ton of beef on the hoof with a sense of entitlement. If you get past him you have the two outside dogs- a doberman and a German shepard that feel unless told otherwise anything that breathes is a threat to the peace and dignity of the farm. Should you make it into the house you have the indoor dog that makes up in protectiveness what she lacks in size. Make it past her you will have to deal with my rudely awaken hubby. This is the guy I leave coffee on the bedstand in the mornings so I don't fear for the children's lives should they encounter him before coffee. Should you get past hubby you will have to deal with me holding the "hungry rifle", my little knife (WWI vintage artillery bayonet actually) and the intention you will get to my kids over my dead and bleeding body... If you are lucky the bull will kill you first.

If you’ve never seen what mastiffs can do in a fight, you might say it would have been the least of their worries. I’ve seen what they can do when provoked. And pits are rarely anything more than an annoying nuisance to them.

There are those that would seek to truly limit your ability to defend yourself, your home, and your children. And I’m not advocating breaking laws. But when it comes to the security of me and mine, I’d rather at least be alive to be alive to make it to my trial. Take that how you will.

Glad it worked out for you. We have apartments about 3 streets over. Section 8 type. Get some weird ones walking the neighborhood at night especially the weekends.
I ended up clearing all the bushes from around the house and putting flood lights all around the house
It has worked so far

I imagine you didn't much sleep last night. If you don't already have it, you may want to invest in some lighting for that area, and maybe a motion detector aimed at chest level that will chime in your house if you fence is breached, in the event that the dog is inside due to inclimate weather. Also, for relatively cheap, you can buy FAKE cameras with red LED lights and place them at strategic positions in plain sight.

Why did you not “grab” your weapon off the nightstand?

As the situation is described, I hope I would have done so regardless of the presence of the dog. I would have rather had it in hand and not needed it than the opposite.

Very thankful things turned out well for your household. Stay safe.

Glad things worked out the way they did. Nothing will get your BP and heart rate up more than the anticipation of a confrontation with the unknown, especially at night
My property is bordered by a 100 acre tract of woods and a creek. There is a path to the creek that runs along the opposite side of my back fence line and I probably know or have previously seen the majority of the people that use it. Most are just passing by, kids with fishing poles, couples out for a walk with their dog, the kind of folks that wave as they walk by. But every once and a while I get the meth head thief or some jerk(s) that have no respect for fences and posted no trespassing signs.
I'm a big believer in layers of security. Fence, motion detector cameras and lights, dogs (Rottweiler), security windows and doors and the armed homeowner. It's sad that I, and probably many others reading this, have to live this way but I lost my faith in my fellow man many years ago. Paranoia? Nah, I call it being cautiously pro active.

Some people brush up against the grim reaper and never know it...
Had my finger on the trigger once, on a guy who was threatening my staff with a knife. Only reason he didn't die right there was there were customers behind him and I couldn't maneuver for a clear shot.
Fortunately, he dropped the knife and ran- the cops caught him later.

Of course, then I had to finish my shift with a wicked adrenaline come-down. Lol.

Glad you didn't have to waste anybody either, Capn!

In tbe event of an "incident", i will have a clearer conscience knowing that the fence was breached, the camera was set off, the lights were on, the dog was barking, and the door alarm was sounding. Anyone thst advances through all that is looking for trouble....and likely to find it.

in regards to why i didnt grab it, I suppose it hadnt reach the point where I thought it was necessary yet. probably should have, sooner its in hand the better. but it was literally right there.

Glad all went ok

A good dog is one of the best security system you can have.

It’s funny. Yesterday my neighbor was telling me that another neighbor who walks the neighborhood everyday was scared because my dog barks as they go by. He told the walker that my dog was no threat as long as he stayed on the street. So it’s nice to know people won’t be coming up to the house unless invited.

That said, as OP learned here, criminals will avoid a house with dogs if given a choice. Thankfully they weren’t desperate for a fix, money etc. I hate for anyone to be harmed, but I also hope those guys get what they deserve. Hopefully the next house they pick to rob is owned by a cop who busts them. If they get worse I hope the press doesn’t spin it as them being the victim.

The dog was mankind's first "early warning system". Even one that won't fight for you will alert you soon enough that you have time to not get caught by surprise. So, make sure your dog gets something special in his/her bowl as a way of saying thanks that it spared you a night at the police station explaining your self-defense shooting.

Considering it is Arizona, planting some native plants like cholla will discourage interlopers from coming into your yard.

Gotta love dogs:).
BILs house was broken into night before last (spfld IL). No dog.

Me and all my neighbors have dogs. It's true, criminals will move on to a dog less house if given the choice.
"I ain't messing wit no F-ing pit bull! No way man!" Lol, that's right buddy... Move it along..

Hi...
My Labs are my Distant Early Warning System.
Doubt they would bite anyone(they seem to love everybody) but they make a lot of racket when somebody comes near the estate.
I live in a semi-rural suburban development with fairly large lots(mine is 1-3/4 acres).
Doors are always locked...weapons close at hand. Cocked and locked 1911, SKS with multiple stripper clips and 12ga.
Semi auto shotgun.
Dogs would be the least of their problems if a break-in in were to occur.

I had never heard of a Boerboel before. I looked it up, and am impressed: "bred to guard the homestead". Looks like a very fine breed.

Yes, having a four legged friend like that, with territorial instincts, is an outstanding early warning system.
