Today during coOl down periods for a bolt gun load development, I shot some +P 38 spl. Longshot loads over the chrony, 125 gr. XTP's. Longshot has been my long time favorite for full pressure SD loads, and it always runs great, and although I've run them across the chrony before, I decided to document some of my loads I've been carrying and shooting for years.

THE FOLLOWING LOAD DATA EXCEEDS PUBLISHED DATA AND SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED AS SAFE OR RECOMMENDED DATA. AS ALWAYS, WHEN RELOADING, WORK UP FROM A STARTING CHARGE. NOTE, EVERY FIREARM IS DIFFERENT, AND WHILE ONE FIREARM MAY OPERATE WITHOUT ISSUE, ANOTHER CAN PRODUCE SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT / HIGHER PRESSURES.

So I started with my Taurus 4" 608 compensated and 7.0 grs. of Longshot, CCI 500's, 125 gr, XTP's. Velocities were in the upper 1100 fps range, nipping at 1200 fps.. Brass almost fell out of the cylinders, nice. Ran the same load through my S&W 66-5 .357 with slightly lower velocities, not much lower though, same nice brass extraction.

I ran the next load, which was 7.2 grains, velocity increased to just over 1200 fps, 1220's from the 608, again, slightly less from the 66-5.

Bumped it up to 7.5 grs. and velocity was consistently in the mid 1200's, all 6 from both guns were above 1250 fps from both revolvers, with maybe a slight edge from the 608, but barely distinguishable. Very pleased with the upper end load in every aspect, no pressure issues what so ever. Accuracy was also very good. I was able to keep all but two in a 6" group at 25 yds. off hand.

I use it in the 9mm, 10mm, and 40Short. The 10mm gets>1250 FPS w/200 XTP. Very impressive. Load is published. Clean , accurate, powerful. Haven't chrono'd the other 2 calibers, but I think the results are comparable.

Favorite load in 45acp is 7.4gr pushing a 185gr pill. Flashy but accurate.

Longhshot is great! I like it in .45 Super and .40 S&W. It will move a 180gr JHP to over 1250fps from a G35.

Longshot is my powder of choice for .38 Special +P loads using a jacketed bullet. I go to HS-6 when loading a lead bullet to .38 Special +P pressures. I also use Longshot in some of my 9mm ammo.

I think I read somewhere Longshot was meant to replace HS-7 (W571) when it was discontinued. It does fill the same niche. (think 10mm)

Arch, I think your right about it filling the HS7 spot. I used HS7 quite a number of years ago, and just loved it.

Then one day when I had a bunch of LS I was using for stout 1-1/2 oz. pheasant loads, I noticed some really good looking handgun data. I gave it a try and haven't looked back since.
