I haven’t bought a gun in over a year, and yesterday had an uncontrollable hankering to visit the local gun shop. I was last there about 5 months ago, and the selection was abysmal. I was curious to see what was there with the apparent current buying frenzy.

As I was driving to the shop, I was trying to rationalize a purchase. I have no ideal concealed carry handgun in my arsenal, the smallest being a Glock G19. I like the G19 as it‘s a lot of gun in a fairly compact package. But unless I dress like a clown, it is definitely not for concealing on my 165 lb frame. I was thinking of a “battle plan” for pistol selection, depending on availability, as I drove.

First choice would be a G26, as I’ve been begrudgingly growing fond of my 9mm Glocks. Then a subcompact XD 9mm, as I like my big ugly 5” XD45. A Ruger LCP, I told myself, would be my third choice, and if all else failed a Kel-Tec .380. My ultimate backup plan was a 2” .357 SP101 if they had the bobbed hammer version. I once had a 3” .357 version that was an awesome if heavy little gun, and fun to work up hand loads for. I told myself over and over that I’d walk right past any Springfield EMP or Kimber Ultra CDP if they had them. I’ve been lusting after those two, big time (1911 platform pistols are my favorites), but they are a little above my budget and I didn’t think I’d want to subject such nice looking pistols to holster wear right from the get-go. And despite the reliability that my full-size Kimber has demonstrated, I've heard of too many issues with the pretty little Ultra.

So I got there, and they did have a couple G26’s (and thankfully no EMP‘s or Ultra CDP‘s), but a couple polymer-framed single-stacks caught my eye - a Walther PPS and a Kahr PM9. I held them both. The Walther felt awesome in my hand, super slender but fully “three-fingerable” (at least with the magazine that was in it). But it was also longer and taller then the Kahr, and was the only pistol that I’ve ever held that was even uglier than my XD. The slide was TALL.

The PM9 felt pretty good despite the two-finger grip. I liked the sights, the trigger-reach, and really loved the dimensions. Aesthetically, it had the no-nonsense look of the Glocks. I appreciate the lack of "forced styling" on a utilitarian pistol.

I then held the G26. In truth it didn’t feel all that much more concealable than my 19. I was a little disapointed in it's bulk after holding the single-stacks. If I had to use a two-finger grip using my short and somewhat scrawny fingers, I figure at least the single-stack would allow for a better hold.

So despite not ever researching the PM9, or ever even thinking much about any Kahr, I bought the PM9. In fact, I was up until recently thinking that Kahr and Kel-Tec were one and the same and have pretty much ignored them. But this little pistol looks to be very well made. The polymer frame looks better molded/finished than that of my Glocks and XD. I just hope ends up being sufficiently reliable.

How do you PM9 owners like this little Kahr and how are you carrying them?

My PM9 is my everyday carry. It rides in a Desanits Nemisis in my dress pants. I love that little 9. Make sure you use the slide release to load. I do not know why, but it makes a difference. Also 200 rounds are needed for a break in

I too own an XD but mine is the .40 subcompact. Ugly? Yep but as reliable as a good dog, just not a pocket rocket. I've been lusting for a lcp but I recently got a real good report on the pm9 from someone I trust. I think I have a new goal.

I love my PM9. Just remember to chamber the first round using the slide stop and not the slingshot method and you'll be fine.

Most people, a lot of times, ride the slide back or release softly. This will fail to chamber the round and cause a FTF. It specifies this in the manual as well. If you use the slide release, it chambers positively with maximum force and you won't have an issue.

Congrats on your small 9mm! Awesome guns are 9mms this size. I don't have a pm9, but my mk9 is almost as small (thicker grip). I carry it comfortably in an uncle mikes pocket holster SIZE 3. That size is for "380s" but fits the PM9/MK9 very well.

I also use a high noon split decision and enjoy the comfortable carrying it provides. I have liked it so much, even just being a "cheaper" holster, that I will most assuredly purchase more holsters from that company.

I load 147 grain gold dot +P loads in mine, knowing that the 147 works well expanding with lower velocity numbers: i have this ammo stocked from both double tap or georgia arms.

That's just a funny image for some reason. I guess there's plenty of room in the shoes then.

I'd love to have a PM9, I just can't justify the almost $700 price tag. Especially, since I have the 642 and 442 to put in my pocket.

My XD45 has been great, reliable with factory ammo and more accurate in my hands than my other poly-framed pistols. In truth, it's beastly looks don't bother me one bit. Also, I don't think the subcompact ones are nearly as ungainly looking as my 5" one.

I can't justify the expenditure at all either. I had been good (i.e. no gun related purchases, other than bullets, powder, and primers) for over a year. I don't know what came over me. If I already had a lightweight carry revolver, I would probably have not bought the small Kahr, but I have a feeling I would have bought something else just for the heck of it. I can't say that I have buyer's remorse, but it certainly wasn't a well thought-out purchase.

Thanks everybody for the function and carry tips. The clerk did inform me of the possibility of the break-in requirement, which isn't a real big deal to me. If I make the haul to the range, it's pretty rare for me to shoot less than 250-300 rounds of centerfire ammo. But, alas, with current ammo and reloading component costs, that'll probably have to change.

250-300 rounds through your PM9 = bruised hand hahah. I've read numerous people saying that you have to break in the PM9 but mine didn't have a single FTF or FTE.

I sold a MK-9 and I really wish I could hit the "undo" button. It's the only gun I've sold that I really miss.

Never had the polymer Kahr, but I'm sure it will serve you well. I read a lot of negatives early on in the PM9's life but most seem to agree they are now quite reliable.

I've been wondering what shooting the little nine's going to be like - I've pretty much been sticking to 9mm and .45 acp in standard-size pistols in recent years. I had an alloy compact .40, and I didn't enjoy putting a lot of rounds through it.

I guess that which does not kill me might only make me develop a nasty flinch.

PM sent, great gun you bought there, IMO one of the best made..

PHYDEAUX 642. You can buy the PM9 most ofthe time for $550 and under. I see um soemtimes liesed onthese gun forums for under $500 alot.

Youcan buy the cw9 (alittle bigger) for $400 about any day of the week and it has the same internals as the PM9 jsut a few bells and whistles left off but not lacking any of the quality stuff either.

Bie the bullet (pun) and get you a kahr and you won't regret it. They ain't cheap but neither is life.
I carry my PM9 24/7 in my frontpocket in my jeans in a desantis and have for over 2 years. Never even know it is there.

The xd compact is a super nice gun but comparing in weigth it is around 26 ounces compared to the kahr at 14 ounces and about an inch longer and 3/4" higher. Certainly to me takes it out of the realm of a pocket gun,but not knocking it either. Xd owners swear by them. I will say they are "ugly" but again only in the eyes of the believer.. the PPS is uglier by far... but is a nice small gun and weighs in at 22 ounces but is longer and more in height thanthe Kahr PM9.

The PF-9 would also have been a good choice. I like the Kahr just fine but really didn't see it being any easier to conceal than my P-11. My wife liked the Kahr PM9 but ended up going with the Taurus Pt111 for her CCW. I'm not a small man at 5' 10" 215lbs but I live in Florida, its more difficult to conceal a firearm when your dressed for the heat and hummidity so I also bought the p-32. I have always had good luck from my Kel-tec's.

ScareyH22A,
thanks for the info!

It's good to see that most of the recent posts on the PM9 and getting more positive. I was an unlucky one that got a bad one. It was a late model as well. I gave Kahr one chance to fix it and they just changed the problem. I no longer have it. My biggest regret was that it would have been an ideal ccw piece. Maybe they had another revision after mine. Seeing these latest comments has me thinking about trying another even though I'm a big wheel fan and love my J frames.

I just picked up a PM9 also. I took it to the range last weekend and fired 150 flawless rds. I now have 2 Kahrs and have grown to love their size/weight, and reliability.

I have a PM9 and like it, carry it frequently.
Cor-Bon generates a pretty good kick in the PM9, but not any worse than a PM40 with standard 40 loads. The Remington +p seems to be a good fit with the PM9.

PM9

I was searching for a small CCW to replace a heavier OWB and pocket carry . Most important would be reliability followed closely by comfort ! First time out I tried a brand new .380 as I thought the round ample for My needs, well that gun purchase turned into a nightmare so I was warry of buying brand new from another U.S. manufacturer instead of a used proven weapon. But I still needed that reliablity trust thought in My head so I wanted to try again and with a weapon I would know right from the start. Research steered Me towards the Kahr PM 9 . Could not pick any up locally so I would have to order 1 . Ordered 1 from My LGS and has been with Me daily since with zero issues ! Very easy carry IWB@ 3:30 with a Comp-Tac and 2 7rds mags on My other side . Should go over 1,000 round mark either today or tommorow if I can get away. I don't notice the recoil even after 100 rounds . Mine I can sling shot to load after 300 round mark or so , but still find myself loading with the slide release as habit. There is a great lube chart floating around that I use also. Buying it brand new isn't that thing TIGHT ??? I stuff it with 124gn.+P Gold Dots...........WVleo

yup crap happens. u got a lemon and kahr tried to make lemonade out of it and it still was a lemon. It is easy after that to get down on a company. I would be very unhappy also. But you seem to also know that "sh-t" happens, not good when it happens to you but it happens.

Kahrs are damn good guns, They are 100% better than 4 years ago in their polymer frames especially. today the polymer guns seem good to go right out of the box. This is a real plus for kahr, as one can't seem to find um sitting around dealer shelves anymore either. Their reputation for a great gun and a small and lite gun has sold alot of "other " gun lovers. I don't think kahr today takes a back seat to any gun company and in ccw guns, I think kahr rules..

I love my G19 but it won't ride in my pocket. I have friends who love their xd's but they may call them compact but compared to a kahr they are in another league.

I sold guns for over 40 years and today I personally feel my kahr is as trust worthy as my G19. Why can I say that?? 19250 rounds out of my PM9 and never one issue. Just goes bang every time.. Most people who own these sub compact guns never fire 5000 rounds in their life time. 200 rounds down range and no issues, it is considered good to go and carried after that with little range time also.

I stillhave my model 60 that was fully engraved back in 1974. One can't IMO say a bad thing about the Smith J frames. They have endured for over 40 years. Love their bodyguard that they brought back into their line..

The sub-compact 9s are simply easier to carry and the reloads are easier to carry concealed than a J frame. Oh, I love revolvers, but I have to admit, the little sub-compact 9s make a lot of sense. My own is a P11 Kel Tec. I'm not the kinda guy that's going to give 700 bucks for a pocket 9 when I can get a Ruger revolver or auto for nearly half that. But, others have other priorities.

There's certainly nothing wrong with a 642, though. It'll protect you just fine and it's a small enough revolver to be easily pocketable.

The PM9 is my EDC. This is my third Kahr and the first one I've ever had problems with. I had about 4 FTFs in the first two hundred rounds and one or two more up to about round 500. I'm in the 1500 round vicinity now and not one MALF since #500. I primarily practice with WWB and I carry Gold Dots. I've never had a MALF with a Gold Dot. Since ammo has gotten scarce I've run all kinda range crap through it without a MALF. The only thing I've refused is Wolf.

Hey Jocko,
Yea, I understand. And I'm very serious about being happy to hear that there are more positive reports on the PM9 now. In fact, mostly all positive. You gave me a lot of ideas when I was dealing with mine and I appreciate it. I do believe that mine could have been fixed if I would have persisted more but you know the story after confidence in a ccw gun is lost. I may well try another one but it will be a while since I've added 4 handguns to my stable the past couple years and I need to be careful. My better half has used up most of her "well, go aheads" and since nobody else would put up with me I'd like to keep her happy.
