Ok so I decided I want a fiber optic sight on the front of my M&P .40, I found a few different options online. The one I ahttp://http://www.dawsonprecision.com/ProductDetail.jsp?LISTID=6F50000-1162601663m leaning towards is from Dawson Precision.

But I have a bunch of Questions now

1. I have NO gunsmith experience, is this a job I can do myself?
2. If I had a gunsmith install the sight what should it cost me?
3. How do I know which height of sight to buy
4. Anything else I should be aware of?

I know to install the sight you need a punch that wont mar the metal, is the sight simply held in by the dovetail or is there lock-tight or something like that under it?

So I called a few of my local dealers today and 2 of them reccomended the same gunsmith. I called him and he wants 45dollars to install a front sight plus the cost of the sight itself. This seems mighty steep for what seems to be a better job but I wanted some opinions if this is about market price.

That seems a little high for installing a sight in an existing dovetail, but after market sights usually require a slight amount of fitting.

S&W or the vendor should be able to tell you what height front sight you would need

You could probably DIY with a delrin/nylon/wood/brass punch, but that sight tube looks kind of fragile. A sight pusher might be a better option.

Regards,
Greg

Wow. My gunsmith chared $10. Until I took him two XDs, he raised his rate to $20 due to the trouble. And that is both sights, not just the front. Some online stores will install free if you buy from them.
