I'm considering buying a economy rifle in either .270 or .308 and having a set of iron sights put on it. How much money am I looking at to have a gun smith put a set on? Thanks

My 1st reaction is to suggest the Savage hog hunter in 308. They are priced at $439 locally. You can buy a cheaper rifle, but after adding irons will be over the cost of this.

Why don't you just buy one with factory sights?

I just bought a rem 700 with factory irons.

Some older economy rifles come already drilled and tapped for receiver sights. Here's a perfect example of an older "economy" rifle that is likely higher in quality than many of todays standard production rifles: Remington 721 .270.

It already has open sights, but is factory drilled and tapped for a receiver sight. This means anyone that owns a screwdriver can mount a superior aperture type sight.

Other rifles and models that are similar to this are Remington 78's (A Remington 700 in every way except in fanciness) and Winchester Rangers (Model 70's in every way except in fanciness). Don't overlook rifles based on commercial Mauser actions such as Interarms and Charles Daly's. They too are typically available in the calibers you seek and are of good quality.

iron sights for a .308 combat rifle...for a hunting rifle, unless you are a trained rifleman as in the military, you are kinda defeating the purpose of the ballistics of the .270 and ,308, flat shooting to an extent. maybe you are gonna hunt wooded areas.

There are only about 8 bazillion bolt .308 and .270 rifles that already have open sights on them. One option:

Check the used gun racks and get one that was made with irons. Damned hard to find a worn out bolt action rifle.
