I may buy a garand soon, after i buy a 1911 and other things. Is CMP the best way to go, do they come with original slings? My local gun shops dont have garands all to often and when they do, they are 1K plus. I noticed a lot of guys buying through CMP. do thy have good customer service, how long did it take to get your rifle?

That depends ENTIRELY on conditions that exist within the CMP at the time you place your order. Depending on recent releases, new acquisitions, time of year and other factors too.... it can take anywhere from 10 days to 10 weeks to receive a rifle from the CMP.... maybe longer for some grades. No way to know for certain until you place order and the CMP sends you the update E-mail.

Do a bit of searching on this forum. This has been discussed often. Bottom line is, as Swampy says, that going the CMP route is a no-brainer.

If you take a look at the CMP website forum, theres a section called "sales" where some folks have been posting running time lines of their purchase. There's a pretty good range but it may give you some idea.

IMO it's worth the trouble and the wait. The first CMP Garand I got had worn-out threads on the barrel and the gas cylinder. The problem didn't manifest itself until after a couple of range sessions, but CMP replaced it promptly.
They did send me an M1 Carbine, though. Of course I had to return it, but at least I got the chance to fondle it for a while.

CMP is really the only affordable way to get a decent rifle but it's also a bit of a lottery. Most everyone is happy with what they get.

Buy a Garand NOW. They aren't making WWII surplus rifles anymore; you'll always be able to get a 1911. Customer service is great. There's a bit of paperwork, but it's worth the savings.
A few hours of cleaning the cosmoline off and you'll be GTG.

From the understanding that I have, this is the last large batch of Garands the CMP will have to sell.
It would be prudent to get the Garand before the 1911.

It depends on the kind of Garand you want really.
If you want a shooter, the CMP is by far the best way to go.
If you are looking at some kind of collectible, matching numbers, investment piece the CMP rifles are not really what you want.
Now, that collector grade Garand is gonna cost you 3 or4 times the CMP price so that's something to keep in mind too.
garandguy.com is a decent place to get an idea of pricing on the more "correct" collectible types, among other sources.

CMP sells both "shooters" and collector grade rifles, and that includes documentation with your name on it as the buyer. My M1 rifles are CMP "field grade" and I'm very satisfied with them.

Well let's be fair, they haven't had any good collector grade rifles in a very long time, and their auction system isn't the best in the world for the few they do get.
From a collectors standpoint it's a crapshoot.
I'd buy the Garand before the 1911.
The CMP rifles aren't going to last forver, or even that much longer. No telling when the next price increase will hit either.
New 1911's are still going to be around for the next 100 years though.
Buy the Garand now and some ammo while the gun and ammo are available. Then save up for the 1911.

this rifle originally came from the cmp...
i have no idea what grade. i would think it is a "correct grade" as it has the original barrel, (TE=2 MW=1) 1955 springfield... DAS cartouche and Circle P stamp... stock is wonderful yet has some dings... metal is fantastic...
but it does have a couple HRA parts... NEW HRA trigger assembly and the bolt is also HRA. the only other thing it could be is a service grade i believe...
But i bought it off a man who was selling his collection...
If this gun is any way representative of a service grade from the CMP then I say buy from them. if it is a correct grade you should still buy from them... but if you gotta have one NOW and you want to pick one exactly like you want one,
then buy one on gunbroker.com and pay the difference... which is pretty much what I did...
I have read that the 5.8million springfields are desirable as the late M1s are very dependable so I went for it.
i would love to get onboard with the cmp... now that I own one I want more.

7 rifles from the CMP and every one has been a beaut. Buy now, buy often. They aren't making GI Garands anymore.
