Is it frowned upon to refinish a Mosin stock?

My 91/30 looks like it was reshellacked by a drunken Russian conscript with a dirty sock. I redid my M38, but haven't done the 91/30 yet.

Rondog: I can't stop laughing. :D When you do get around to redoing your 91/30, what are you going to do to it? I personally think a bunch of coats of classic shellac is where its at. Just a few days ago, my dad refinished his M38. He just took off what was on it with some nail polish remover, then put a couple layers of some sort of furniture oil. Looks beautiful.

I don't think they should be modified or refinished. They are not worth much now but that might change when my kids own them in 50 years.

I just picked up a 1944 M44 and though the finish isn't "new looking", I'm going to leave it as it is. Also, I WAS going to replace the rear sight with a scope mount, but I'm leaving that alone as well. If I want a scoped bolt action, I'll get something that WILL be very accurate. This rifle [M44] is more for the fun of shooting it and as it has been untouched for ~ 68 years, there's something about the history and the stories it could tell.

That said, a "run of the mill" 91/30 [with many still out there] . . . I see no reason to be worried about refinishing it if it makes you happy.

Why would it be ok for a government arsenal to maintain their guns by refinishing their property but not you?

An all original M1 Garand is worth more than an aresanal refit. It's acceptable, but it's not going to raise the value to collectors.

the only thing i'd frown upon is worrying about what folks will think and not doing whatever you want with the finish on your gun
