I just picked up a 1944 M44 and though the finish isn't "new looking", I'm going to leave it as it is. Also, I WAS going to replace the rear sight with a scope mount, but I'm leaving that alone as well. If I want a scoped bolt action, I'll get something that WILL be very accurate. This rifle [M44] is more for the fun of shooting it and as it has been untouched for ~ 68 years, there's something about the history and the stories it could tell.
That said, a "run of the mill" 91/30 [with many still out there] . . . I see no reason to be worried about refinishing it if it makes you happy.
