Hello all,
I have a 1925 Izhevsk Nagant (Ex-Dragoon).
Is it possible to float the barrel and still use the upper barrel shroud? Is it even worth it to try?

Probably possible.
Probably not worth it.

It is what it is.

No matter what you do?
It is still going be a worn-out barrel shooting cheap surplus ammo with open sights.

Yes it's possible. I did it with one of my K-31's. Just relieve the wood in the barrel channel, top and bottom, and you should be good to go.
A word of warning though, typically, long skinny barrels such as on the 91/30 usually shoot better with upward pressure towards the end of the forearm.

On those barrels a proper bedding job will help you far more than a freefloat. The metals they used were inconsistent as all hell (strong, but NOT consistent). Starting on the first shot (or even BEFORE the first shot on a hot day in direct sun), the barrel will begin to bend and warp subtly, moreso as it heats up.

A proper, solid bed will cut down on heat induced warpage. Be surprised what a bit of work can do to help those old worn, shot out barrels. Do a bed job and cut a proper crown, and you've got a whole new animal on your hands. :)
