Is Ruger SR9 really an IMPROVED Glock?

OK, I have my body armor on, and I'm ready to take some shots, but I wonder if the new, notorious, Ruger SR9 is really an improved Glock for hundreds less. Why? While a lot of people love their Glocks AS IS, plenty of people are spending hundreds extra to get the features that come stock on the Ruger.

Here are the numbers:

Glock 17 = $600.00 suggested retail.
Glock N.Y.1 8# trigger spring = $20.00 installed.
Robar Guns backstrap reduction = $165.00.
Robar Guns rounded trigger guard = $45.00
Cominolli thumb safety = $125.00 installed.
Total cost = $955.00 (not including shipping, or wait time)

Ruger SR9 with all those features straight out of the box = $525.00 suggested retail.

For someone looking at a CUSTOM Glock, that's a savings of $430.00. That's enough of a savings to buy a complete Milt Spark holster, belt and ammo carrier with money left over from a case of ammo. It's something to think about.

For each one of those people that spend all that money customizing their Glocks, there are probably about a thousand that don't spend any money customizing their Glocks. When the Ruger is as reliable out of the box as the Glock and offers as many options as the Glock, then it can think about taking away Glocks market share. Until then, not a chance.

Gosh, Ruger lover, I can't think of one reason why I would replace my P89 with a striker fired pistol.

Do they both go bang when you pull the trigger?

*Aside from the fact that it's lighter, has a higher capacity, and is thinner and more concealable...

The market is moving toward striker-fired, polymer-framed pistols. It would be stupid to ignore that trend. To compete in the LEO/Government market, it's the easiest, and currently, most popular choice.

Ruger took advantage of the trend, and the developments, that Glock is just now beginning to emulate.

As to reliability, Ruger has as good a reputation as Glock. Glock, located overseas, has resisted the type of recall that Ruger, an American company cannot afford. There have been problems with firing pins, connectors, unsupported chambers, sights, and magazines with Glock. They always blamed the ammo, or the operator, while making running changes. So what?

You could say that any polymer pistol is a Glock copy, but that doesn't make it correct.

Most Glock 17's that I've seen seem to retail for around $500-525. As far as out-of-the-box reliability, the G17 is hard to beat, and almsot sets the standard in that regard.

I agree... at most, I toss on some night sights and a stainless guide rod... about $110 tops. People that obsessively "upgrade" their Glocks forget that those guns have won numerous competitions with none or just tiny modifications. I think they are doing the guns an injustice. They work well as is.

I think the SR9 is sweet... once they get the kinks worked out. Will it replace the Glock's position in the world? I doubt it.

Even after the refit the trigger on my SR9 the trigger on my Glock is still better. I wouldn't say at all that the SR9 is an improvement over Glock. Ergonomically I like my SR9 better but I wouldn't say its a higher quality gun than my Glock 27.

In reality the only thing that the SR9 and the Glock have in common are that they are both striker-fire handguns with plastic frames and metal slides. Once you get past what they are their differences far outweigh their similarities. If I had to imagine an improved Glock the only gun that comes to mind is the Springfield XD.

I just don't see the comparison at all. The most comparable Glock is probably the full sized Glocks like the Glock 17. Comparing Glock 17 to Ruger SR9:

Glock is lighter
Glock has a longer barrel
Glock is shorter
Glock makes people either very angry or very happy

Ruger has a safety
Ruger has adjustable sights
Ruger has a changeable backstrap
Ruger has a recall

Now my question. Did Apple make a better 83 Buick Century with the iPhone?

When viewed strictly as a tool, I feel nothing presents as good of a value proposition as a Glock. I own 5 sigs and one Glock. My Sigs are pretty and nice to look at, but my Glock is pretty in a pragmatic way. I will not say I am a huge fan of Glock, but I certainly appreciate it for what it is.

I found myself having a similar discussion with a buddy of mine about Neal Peart of RUSH. I detest the RUSH's music but man can that guy drum.

I was disappointed that Ruger's new 9mm was not similar in design to the P345. But, my name isn't old school for nothing. I like guns with hammers.

The only thing that keeps me from buying a SR-9 is the fact that it has a safety. I don't want a safety on my gun that can get placed into the "safe" position when I need it to be in the "fire" position. They just added a flaw to the gun as far as I see it.

The Ruger does feel very nice compared to the Glock. I will keep my G-17 for HD for a long time I think. Maybe in 5-10 years when Ruger has gained a rep like the Glock has will I consider the switch.

I know the Glock inside and out and feel I could fix ANY problem it ever would have. The simplicity is a huge advantage in the Glock. Don't know anything about the Ruger yet.

The funny thing is that I wouldn't pay to have any of those mods on my GLOCKs. The only mods that mine get are a 3.5# connector ($8) an extended slide release ($13) and an extended mag release ($13). I don't like manual safeties, and I feel that a trigger pull in excess of 5# is an unnecessary liabilty. The heavier the trigger pull, the harder it is to hit your intended target- and the easier to hit an innocent bystander.

When I see an SR9 win at some National Event, I'll give it some credibility.

always nice

it is always the gun that everyone compares their guns to. Glocks set the standard. simple is best..

The Sr9 is a darn good gun IMO but not sure it is in the same league as the Glocks.

Umm... I don't know anybody who does that. I sure as heck wouldn't buy a Ruger over a Glock. American engineering vs. Austrian engineering... hmm which is better? Well the American gun has a warning label on it and the Austrian one does not. I'm going to go with the Austrian gun, because there isn't a sign on the frame discouraging me from using it!
