I read "A Pirate Looks At Fifty." Great read.

As for great parrothead anthems, don't forget "Fruitcakes." Kinda describes most of the groups I hang out with!

"Prince Of Tides" from his album, "Hot Water" is a great chill-n-listen tune. When he blends into "Save the Last Dance For Me," it'll make the hair on the back of your neck stand on end. Best played at sunset on a warm night, with a glass of Captain Morgan's and your favorite mixer.

I know it's kind of a "depresing" song .. but .. "He Went To Paris" is one of my favorites from him .. pretty much like every one of his songs though ..

To get it back on topic before it gets closed, yes, he did get shot at, mistaken for a smuggler. By a gun. Now when he travels he carrys guns. Wonder what the other countries he goes to would think about that? Another Jimmy Gun song is "the great filling station holdup" but my favorite 2 have got to be "tryin to reason with hurricane season" and "tin cup challis" (SP)

It's hard for me to pick a favorite...but "God's Own Drunk" has gotta be up there.

Which caliber for drunk "Kodiak lookin fellas"?

God's Own Drunk
Written by - Lord Buckley
From - Living and Dying In 3/4 Time

Well, like to explain to you all before,
I ain't no drinkin' man
I tried it once and it got me highly irregular
And I swore I'd never do it again
I promised my brother in-law that I'd go up watch his still
While he went in to town to vote
It was right up on the mountain
where the map said it would be
Friends let me tell you one thing,
though it wasn't no ordinary still
It stood up on that mountainside
like a hugh golden opal

God's yeller moon shinin' on the cool clear evenin'
God's little lanterns twinklin' on and off in the heavens
Like I explain'd to you once before I ain't no drinkin' man
But temptation got the best of me
And I took a slash
That yella whiskey runnin' down my throat
like honey dew vine water

And I took another slash,
Took another'n an another'n an another'n
For you knew I'd downed one whole jug of that ????
and commenced to gettin' hot flashes
Goose pimples was runnin' up and down my body
And a feelin' came over me
like somethin' I'd never experienced before
It was like, like I was in love
In love for the first time, with anything that moved
Animate, inanimate it didn't matter
It's like there's a great neon sign flashin' on an' off
in my brain sayin' "Jimmy Buffett there's a great day a comin'"
`Cause I was drunk
I wasn't knee crawlin', slip slidin', Reggie Youngin'
Commode huggin' drunk

I was God's own drunk and a fearless man
And that's when I first saw the bear
He was a Kodiak lookin' fella `bout nineteen feet tall
He rambled up over the hill
expectin' me to do one of two things,
Flip or fly, I didn't do either one
It hung him up

He started sniffin' around my body tryin' to smell fear
But he ain't gonna smell no fear `cause
I'm God's own drunk and a fearless man
It hung him up
He looked right in my eyes, and my eyes
was a lot redder than his was
It hung him up

So I approached him, I said "Mr. Bear, I love
every hair on your twenty-seven acre body
I know you got a lot of friends over there
on the other side of the hill
There's ole' rare bear, tall bear, Freddy bear, Kelly bear
Really bear, smelly the bear, smokey the bear,
pokey the bear
I want you to go back over there tonight
And tell them I'm feelin' right
You tell them I love each and everyone of them
like a brother and a sister

But if they give me any trouble tonight
I'm gonna run every God damn one of them off the hill"
He took two steps backwards and didn't know what to think
Neither did I but bein' charitable and cautious
Well hell I approached him again
I said "Mr. Bear, You know in the eyes of the Lord
we're both beasts when it comes right down to it

So I want you to be my buddy, Buddy bear"
So I took ole' buddy bear by his island size paw
and I led him over to the still
He's a sniffin' around that thing cause
he's smellin' somethin' good
I gave him one of them jugs of honey dew vine water
He downed it up right
Looked like one of them damn bears in the circus

Sippin' sasparilly in the moonlight
I gave him another'n an another'n an another'n
For I knew it he downed eight of them
and commenced to doin' the bear dance
Two snips, a snort, a fly turn, and a grunt
It was so simple like the jitter bug
It plum evaded me

We worked ourselves into a tumultuous uproar
And I was awful tired and went over to the hillside
and I laid down and went to sleep
Slept for four hours and dreampt me some tremulous dreams
When I woke up, there was God's yeller moon
shinin' on the clear cool evenin'

God's little lanterns twinklin' on and off
in the heavens
My buddy the bear was a missin'
Want to know something else friends and neighbors
So was that still

JIMMY BUFFETT - "God's Own Drunk" lyrics

Jamaica Mistaka
By: Jimmy Buffett
1996
Some folks say that I've got the perfect life.
Three swell kids, lots of toys and a lovely wife.
I fly. I sail. I throw caution to the wind.
Drift like a stratus cloud above the caribbean.

But every now and then
The dragons come to call.
Just when you least expect it you'll be dodging cannon balls.
I've seen to much not to stay in touch with a world full of love and luck.
I've got a big suspicion 'bout ammunition.
I never forget to duck.

(Chorus)
Come back
Come back
Back to Jamaica
Don't you know we made a big mistaka
We'd be so sad if you told us goodbye
And we promise not to shoot you out of the sky

It was a beautiful day
The kind you want to toast
We were treetop flyin'
Movin' west along the coast
Then we landed in the water
Just about my favorite thrill
When some ??????? started firin'
When we taxied to Negril

Just about to lose my temper
As I endeavored to explain
We had only come for chicken
We were not a ganja plane
Well you should have seen there faces
When they finally realized
We were not some coked up cowboys
Sportin' guns and alibies

(Chorus)
Come back
Come back
Back to Jamaica
Don't you know we made a big mistaka
We'd be so sad if you told us goodbye
And we promise not to shoot you out of the sky

They shot from the lighthouse
They shot from the highway
They shot from the top of the cliff
They'd all gone haywire
We're catchin' fire
And there wasn't even a spliff

Well the word got out
All over the island
Friends, strangers, they were all apologizin'
Some thought me crazy for bein' way to nice
But it's just another ????ty day in paradise

Come back
Come back
Back to Jamaica
Don't you know we made a big mistaka
We'd be so sad if you told us goodbye
And we promise not to shoot you out of the sky

Come back
Come back
Back to Jamaica
Don't you know we made a big mistaka
We'd be so sad if you told us goodbye
And we promise not to shoot you, promise not to shoot you,
Promise not to shoot you out of the sky

Too funny that I should notice this thread while Desperation Samba is playing on the CD player. Me, the wife and kids will be going to Jimmy's concert in Minneapolis in May. Always a fun show.

Seems to me he has a new CD due out this summer featuring his duet with Kenny Chesney, "License to Chill". A new Buffett studio album! Just as much fun as a new firearm!

"Ed, From what I understand he really is a pretty good old boy."

I actually went to a Gore rally just so see Jimmy Buffet.

That is enough reason for me to declare him an enemy of the 2nd.

Back in August 1970 I was religiously perusing the albums in my local G*E*S store (anyone remember those?), as I did every week while my parents bought groceries.

I chanced upon an album by someone I hadn't heard of before. It was titled "Down To Earth" by some guy named Jimmy Buffet. What the heck an album was only $3.49 then, so I bought it. As usual I bought 3 or 4 albums that day so it was a day or two before I played it. It wasn't exactly country, even though it was recorded in Nashvegas. it wasn't exactly rock and it wasn't folk. It was just different. I wasn't exactly blown away but it was quirky and some of the tunes were catchy.

It didn't end up in the racks of albums that I jammed along with while learning how to play.
It didn't end up in the small case of albums of make out music that I'd carry over to my gurlfriend's house for "atmosphere".
It ended up in the rack of albums that were background music. This was music I played when I was working on my railroad models or electronic projects. it started to grow on me and I played it a lot.
The Christian, The Captain & the Kid and Captain America became my favorites.

I searched for anything else by Mr Buffett but the phonolog showed nothing else. Then, much to my suprise, shortly after graduating High School in 1973 the album A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crusteacean appeared. Now THAT album blew me away. Not a bad song on the album. A true masterpiece.

I have been a Proud Parrothead every since. I have so far attended 27 concerts. Although none in the past 10 years. i was even present in the second row at Bellarmine College when he announced he was having a "good friend come out and assist him singing the World's Greatest Love Song. You might know him his name is Danny Fogleberg." Fogleberg came out, sang harmony on the chorus of Why Don't We Get Drunk and the walked off to a standing ovation. I was also at the Fox for the live album You Had To Be There. (everlasting thanks to Timmy Kreckel for getting me in) I was also in the audience when he hosted Nashville Now on the real TNN. (if you saw it you know why it was such a big deal)

I have very Buffet Album released. But I no longer have my orginal Down To Earth. A few years back I traded it to a fellow Parrothead for all of the first 20 Buffet albums on CD (including Rancho Deluxe). and retired the rest of my vinyl.

Oh yeah his books are awsome as well.

I really don't care what his politics are, even though his seem to be pretty rational for the most part.
I have never found anyone I agree with 100% all of the time either. Have you?
Some people just transcend the mundane.
Jimmy Buffett is one.

Imagine my dismay..... My daughter asked me what song I wanted for the "Father-Daughter" dance at her wedding.

I Chose "Little Miss Magic" by Jimmy.

Then I took a look at wedding sites (I was actually looking for the lyrics) and found out it was in the top 3 of wedding songs.... I really thought I was being kinda original.

Well, I've been a wedding DJ for 24 years, and nobody has ever selected that song. My guess is that there is a parrothead on that website! :)

I once was asked to play "Pre-You" at an anniversary party!
