So, this may be a stupid question, if my 60 has a hold-open lever at all, is also a last-shot hold-open?

Thanks for entertaining the queries of a newbie who's not at home with is new toy...

Honestly the next rimfire I buy will be a model 60. Probably used too. Just too cheap and accurate to not own a few. I will say the SS options looks pretty slick. I have always had a thing for SS rifles and this may just be the answer.

Think I lucked into the 'unicorn'!

Just found and downloaded the Marlin 60 manual, which shows most models have the bolt hold-open on the charging handle (so that's what that little arrow's for!).

Mine also has the BHO lever catch (on the trigger guard), so I'm guessing it must be for the last-shot hold-open function. Combined with the 19-shot capacity I have apparently and unwittingly lucked into a rare version of the rifle. So I guess I did OK for $120? ;)

I've got squirrels on both sides; rabbits, acorns, coyotes, & wolves? Ah nuts, how am I going to explain to the wife that I need a half-dozen (plus synth stock, plus stainless) more of 'the same rifle'?

I can usually find these old Glenfields and Marlins in pawn shops. Around here they can usually be had for around $60.00 out the door. (after negotiations) Luckily for me that falls in the discretionary funds category.

I don't have any ideas on how to justify a new one in stainless or with synthetic stocks.

Kind of wanted and AR style .22 at first just because they look cool. However, decided on a Model 60 Instead for the money and the clean lines. By that, I mean it doesn't have an ugly magazine sticking out to hang up on everything. Had it for about a month now and have shot it several times. It shoots anything. Last used Federal Copper coated with no hiccups. Love to rapid fire it at cans or paper on the ground and watch them jump. A great gun. No regrets whatsoever.

Col Plink,
If you pull the bolt back all the way with no rounds in the rifle it should stay open. Just make sure the rifle is empty for safety purposes.
Almost all BHO's operate by a mag spring/follower pushing the BHO into play. On the Marlin 60 it is a bit different as the BHO works whether the tube/follower is in or not. Yours sound like it has the 2 BHO's on it.
I shot mine tonight. It is a shooter.

Have fun & be safe.

...to Liquid...; either your ejector wire needs a little action done to it(go download arrowdodgers m60 instructions off of marlin sticky, on rimfirecentral) or extractors have craggly edges on them, or your recoil rod is not smooth, and the spring is all geeked up on it...Also try the red box American Eagle ammo- it is cheapest, and surprisingly great, accurate, and makes semi auto's work, when most wont.

yes, that lil lever on the front right side of the trigger guard, will allow you to manually open up/lock open the bolt, also if you have the older half moon shaped bolt handle, then yo ucan pull the bolt back to the rear, push in on this handle, and lock it all the way back, and it will not move, until you pull out on the bolt handle. The lever in the front right of the trigger guard will also automatically hold open the bolt, on the last shot.

so yes to Col Plink, long tube, long bbl, last shot bho, you did real well for 120.
Problem with the Glenfields? though they have the cool stuff pressed into the side of the stock,
I do not think any glenfields were made, that have the long tube, and the LSBHO feature.
I think they were stopped being made in 83 or 84'. I could be wrong though, and if you have a Glenfield, made in 85' with a long feed tube, and the LSBHO feature, I would re-he-hheeaaally like
to see one, before I die!!!!

If you look at the glenfield on the prev page; it does have the cool squirrely and pressed checkering
on it, very nice by the way, but see the front right side of the trigger guard has no little lever sticking down through it? that means no last shot BHO.
See also how the feed tube goes all the way to the end of the bbl almost? If this is a 22 inch bbl,
then that feed tube holds at least 17 rounds, if it is a 19 inch bbl, it proly holds 14, maybe 15 if it has a lot of wear to it.

and for the Glenfields; the Wolf one, in full Howl, is the hardest to find, good luck!

the wildcats are a bit weak, I agree. I tried to run a remmy speedmaster last weekend, and got a lot of jams. Also the meplat(face) in them is a bit flat.
through some oil into the receiver, and blew it out a bit. They ran a bit better, then i put my PMC hi speeds in there... went without a hitch, and you could tell by the sound, the pmc's had more power.

nice squirrelly one for bid..

I now have 4 of them, 2 old 18 rounders and 2 in carbon fibre blue and stainless.

I post sometimes on rimfire central about the blond wood mid 60's Glenfield. I had relegated it to the "near junk" status to be used as a truck gun/loaner because it had been burgled in 2004, then found 17 months after after laying under a tree where it was tossed by the criminals just before their Sheriff Raid.

After recovery it was all rusted, but my smithy did what he could without a repolish and hot blue. I did he wood, but with a cheap rifire scope it didn't seem to shoot well.

Last fall I acquired another Bushnell 4-12x40 Sportview like I use on the SS.

Zowie, all cleaned up this gun feeds and shoots real nice.... I bench shoot the Prairie Dogs, and resight at 100 yards each month. I was out with a sportswriter on the range and we both got 1.5" groups at 100 yards using WallyWorld Federal Bulk. We then tested it against a Winchester 52B Sporter and they were about equal.

I logged a number of measured PD kills at 200-240 yards during the fall. Obviously I shoot multiple shots a that range, but I did one head shot at 230 right after reloading....the holdover gets almost second nature when you do 3500 rounds a season.
( Much of my shooting is on a grass strip airport that entertains me on a regular basis. )

I just mounted a Sweet 22 scope on gun number 3 to use next year, and I will be competing with a buddy with a tricked out 10/22. Should be fun!

I've heard they are great .22's but I had no idea that people collect them. It's a cheap habbit b/c you can buy them off gunbroker for real cheap if you look hard. I think I'll pick one up sometime and toss on that tech sight aperture.

Ya'all got me to go pull mine out & look at them one is a 1982 Glenfield version that was my Dad's has the Blond plain stock. The other was made in 1996 IIRC I got it on sale at Wal Mart for about 95.00 back then. It has the youth medallion on the stock. At the time I didn't care, just wanted something that would work to go squirrel hunting. I haven't had any jams out of the newer one. The older one has jammed some with Remington bulk ammo. I don't have a very high opinion of Remington bulk ammo.

nope, remmy ammo pretty much runs like crap through these;
Keb, that is some sweet shooting with a 22 cal, but I guess taking that many aimed shots at varmints every year will do that... very nice.
Love the blond wood ones.
also above dude, it may or may not, you might wanna find a wood guy, but a lot of times the mod 60's with the various medallions in the side; (nra, ducks unlimited , boy scouts, anniversary, etc.) came with walnut wood. you know if yours has it?

Also to Keb, how do you like the carbon fiber stocks on the 60's; did they come that way, or did you
have to order that stock for the 60? I know some of their newer bolties come with a CF stock.

Yep , the mod 60 is a true enigma; everything on it screams inaccurate , but they are very accurate.
check some of mine , at 100 yds, sandbag rests. 24x Barska scope

this next one is american eagle, that is 4 shots in 1 hole, and a 5th shot called flyer
that, my friends, is outstanding... I credit the ammo, as it is very good for a lot of folks.

I knew the 60 I got from my sis-in-law stayed open after the last round. I actually counted the minimags I dropped into it last night and the tip of # 18 just shows in the loading port, chamber empty 18 in the tube. I paid $90 2-3 years ago... there is a very small chip out of the stock (pencil eraser size).
Suddenly I like it even more.
:D

Oh man, I did NOT get to go shoot mine this weekend. :(
Buddy of mine wanted to go window shopping for the Marlin with the clip fed system; looks like a shorter barrel too but with factory rebate right now they're $100. Think I may have got him more interested in the model 60; he's not so keen on having to buy extra mags but I'm not so big on the tube feeders, no accounting for taste I suppose.

Saw a Savage mag-fed bolt action with tiger stripe wood and a Bushnell 3-9x32 for $150 at Dick's, thought that was a pretty smokin deal. Cabela's has a bolt-action 22mag for $200 that has me thinkin'...

Mostly I'm just thinkin' about shooting my 60 and dialing in the scope so I can plink to my heart's content for cheap with it and my CZ-52. If I ever get my VZ-24 scoped I'll be in rimfire and surplus ammo heaven!

Also to Keb, how do you like the carbon fiber stocks on the 60's; did they come that way, or did you
have to order that stock for the 60? I know some of their newer bolties come with a CF stock.

They come that way, last time I looked on Marlin's web site they still had them.

See the 100 yard photos above? That is what we got too.

As crazy as it sounds I use the Marlin 60 to judge all other rifles by. Something that works that great, that accurate, and for that price?

They set the bar pretty high ;)

Mike

I feel the same way. Having paid twice what I got my marlin 60 for to get a 10/22 that just wasn't that accurate, why would I then turn around and sink more $ into it just to make it as accurate as the 60?

Not the biggest fan of tube loaders, but can't see the utility of going berserk with accessories just to be able to shoot more than 19 shots...

I just picked up another 60, I only have the one. I got it on sale new for $140 OTD. Since used models in any decent quality are $120, why buy used.

My only complaints are my usual ones, stock to small and tube fed, I can get over the tube fed. And it won't keep me from shooting it. And the cut on the forend looks like an after thought. 90° cut? That is ugly.

But it shoots great and is a good ammo waster.
