My daughter would like to get into competition shooting. She will be starting high school next year. I'm wondering if any of you guys would know where I can find a club or organization that she can get involved in. Does 4h offer shooting? How about some kind of NRA program.

Also, are there scholarships available at the college level for shooters?

Thanks in advance,

Michael

Smallbore rifle shooting is an NCAA recognized sport, and there are scholarships available.

Also, check out USA Shooting. They are the national governing body for the Olympic shooting sports in the USA.

USA Shooting Website

Also, here's a section of their website that will allow you to search for a nearby USA Shooting affiliated club.

Start her in IDPA - its a lot less cost intensive/difficult than IPSC and I know that the Houston/Beaumont area has at least one club running.

You might try the NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program.
It has courses of fire for everything from air pistols and rifles to shotguns and muzzleloading firearms.

Your daughter could try out several different disciplines and see which one she likes best.

More info is available at www.mynra.com. Look for the Education and Training Division.

i earned a scholarship to shoot on a college rifle team. i shot smallbore 3-position, and air rifle. i have heard of there being other styles of shooting in different schools, but i think they are only clubs and don't give out scholarships. most of the schools that do have rifle teams are in the eastern states. xavier in cincinnati, university of tennessee at martin(where i went), alabama state univ in jacksonville, al. univ of alaska fairbanks, murray state univ murray, ky. to name a few. west virginia had a team but last i heard it was dropped even though they were(depending who you talk to) the best team out there. very few "full-ride" scholarships are given out for shooting. most people receive only a partial, which is better than nothing.

with her being female that makes her very desirable for a rifle team. she can compete(assuming she is good enough) on the regular team and also be fielded on the female team. that way they can have "2 people" for the price of one scholaship.
