Just 30 seconds more…

I don’t know who or what I pissed off in another life, but when does bad Karma wear off? This being a nice guy – well – maybe I need to re-think this.

I have, amongst others burrs , a burr under my saddle called Domestic Violence. So when asked if I could use my truck to move some furniture from the daughter’s place on the same piece of property as the Parent’s I said yes.

Daughter has a chance to leave town and live with her Sister. Job opportunities, getting away from an abusive boyfriend makes good sense. Her Daddy has had minor knee surgery, the momma is about to have the same minor surgery.

Well we all know how well Restraining Orders work on protecting folks. So being a small rural town, the daddy knows and asks that one of the Deputies show up if and when can.

Daughter and I finish up; Deputy hasn’t shown yet, caught with other obligations. Thirty seconds more and the daughter would have been off property. Here comes the BF driving like a maniac dust everywhere. Dammit to hell…I holler for her to take off in her car and head anywhere – just get gone -just get away! She heads out and little did I know there was a little farm road that went off property as she sped away out back of property. [ Front of property BF direction, and I figured she'd just cut some distance all I cared about]

Well here he comes , and I remind him he is under RO. Well just my luck he is a “ big old boyâ€. I’m 6’ 170 # and out of shape. Well “ a little guy can beat a big guy if he is in the right and keeps coming at himâ€. Yeah well whoever wrote it , did not do so looking at 6’ 3†and I’m guessing 200 – 220 #.

I really don’t want to Rodeo, I ain’t getting younger. I really hate the thought of problem #2…He does have a Quart bottle of beer…brain does a quick legal thinking…In fear of myself and opponent has a “weaponâ€. The Daddy is up now with all the ruckus, he is using the phone ( I find out later to the Deputy en-route on cell phone) .

Well hell…he charges and I chuck my ceramic coffee cup at him as hard as can. Thank Gawd for Little League as a kid. Down he goes. Now I am keeping distance circling…thinking okay that worked now what the hell I’m I gonna do next. If I run the possibility of parents getting hurt is a real concern…I won’t do that.

So up he gets and charges…Well hell I played football little league ( okay quarter back and end) but I can do this. Head down and inside I go pin him against his vehicle, using my knee to chest a bunch of times. My hands, well one was pushing his head up and away and my other had a death grip on his throat. For some reason he did not use his fists on me. Too busy trying to remove my hands. Who knows…stuff like this happening so fast. Well my brain was racing about- what now/ next? I decided to shut his door on his leg. [ loud crunch sound] That worked.

At no time did I feel my CCW was going to be used against me. It was well concealed, but accessible. Nobody knew I was carrying. I really wanted to keep my "ace in the hole" in the hole.

I never saw the Deputy drive up, I didn’t hear the 870 get racked either (blows that intimidation theory). “If you are through having fun, can I play now?†â€. Asked the Deputy.

I did get to put the cable ties on him tho’. . I did volunteer the info to Deputy. “Yeah ok , that’s cool…I figure your legal and didn’t you used to...ain’t you a friend of…†( no big deal and not important)

“Why didn’t’ you just shoot him, and save the taxpayers some money†he asked. I replied, “well I didn’t want problem #2 if could be avoided…but I had that option real close at the top of my “next “ of things to do if circumstances dictated.
Deputy pulls out a little Keltec .32 from BF’s backpocket. “ Like if he had produced this?â€

Great.

Well enough time has passed, and can say the daughter is doing well in another place, with Big sister and new job. BF is not doing so well…he didn’t mind beating up on petite women , but he really don’t like grown men beating up on him in his new place of residence.

The Deputy was cool and I was always Okay as far as he witnessed it and wrote it up. The Daddy being a witness was a bonus. I have replaced the ceramic coffee cup - a certain hard head broke.

Still trying to figure out this being a nice guy dealie….and just who or what I pissed off at sometime in my life. This bad Karma wears on a body , and mind as one gets older.

I rec’d a phone call from the daughter, I guess we needed to vent to each other after the fact. Thought maybe some folks would get something from me sharing; that or some folks get to chew my butt out ...whatever.

Sounds to me you ain't a guy to be trifled with. Even though he was bigger than you, you basically kicked his butt. Even if you did have to improvise a little. I liked the part where you slammed his leg in the door. Priceless.

:what: :what:
Glad you're OK and that you kept him busy enough to forget he had that! :uhoh:

(Note to self...always assume the other guy is armed and has buddies...)

You are writing about it. The only thing to remember about domestic violence is that old saying, "If I can't have you, nobody can!" This is usualy followed by a gunshot. Remember the other old saying from LEOs. "There is ALWAYS a gun there. YOURS!"

Holy crap.

It's a good thing you were kickin' tail, because knowing that an irrational opponent has a gun and may use it is a scary thought.

However, you were in the right from the beginning, and if you would have had to shoot him, you'd have been alright. Glad it didn't come to that, though.

Wes

Thanks.
My edit above...umm...err...I was "supposed" to attach that Word Doc in a personal email. I wondered where it went. :p Sheesh at least I didn't send it to Cisco or an Instructor. Who says sleep depravation leads to mistakes - not me...nope - nary a problem. ;)

Jim - Yes.
Word is folks don't take kindly to "manly men" beating up on petite ladies. Gripes about being on the receiveing end, I was told.

Hey, I was lucky - again.
I ever get ahead on time and money, I got some stuff I want to do in regard to training. Hey at this point I'll take getting close to even.

To answer an email - Yes I had a knife clipped to my pocket. Somewhere I read " never bring a beer bottle to a gunfight". Hey this was not a "show me yours and I'll show you mine dealie". I always figure the quicker a situation ended - the better. That "stop an immediate action", mindset.

I can honestly say "mine was bigger". - My gun...

I have to replace the holster, and mag carrier -wear, tear, sweat...I have to wait tho...other stuff pressing. Weird - these have been resewn before, won't take another. Decided to go kaput a few days after this incident. I hate breaking new stuff in.

Answer another email, Aftermath.
Well during , everything seemed slo-mo. Brain was doing a lot of I/O fast. I must have been focused because peripheral stuff was a blur, or I just excluded it, like the racking of 870. I didn't hear it , BF said he sure did. Maybe the guilt for him and the non-guilt for me. Then again he did have a bit of a problem with a leg. Might have had an affect on his sensory perceptions. I dunno...sounds good.

I got angry and pissed and shook. I do that, must be my coping mechanism. Didn't hit until sometime later.
The daughter felt bad for me , afraid for parents and I can't type what she thought of the BF.

I know better , but I "assumed" two things. One he would be at work. Two if a firearm was around , it would be in his vehicle.

Okay everybody from now on is armed, and is gonna shoot me. I always thought like that, really I did...just now it has even more meaning and depth than before.

Well I have to make up a 200 pt exam that I missed due to this...I have no idea what I'm studying. If I knew earlier, I forgot it. This outta be fun.

Yep - them ROs sure do a lot of good...*smirk*

Great job I am glad you came out ok. I am sure someone will ask this sooner or later so it mine as well be me. If before he had charged he mentioned the gun how would you have handled the situation?? From how that facts have been presented I think you would have had to have pulled your gun before he got too close. The next question is would you have had to shoot him? I don't know, I am sure I would have been afraid for my life, but pulling your gun should always be the last resort.

sturmruger,
In that case, Low ready NO words, his actions and my perception of his actions/behaviors dictate my decison to stop an immediate threat. I had my vehicle, or a tree for cover.
Explains a certain weekend why I did a bunch of Tueller drills...

El Tejon,
I was being neighborly. THE neighbor you and I visited on the phone about, IS still my neighbor. I really appreciated your time and adivice that day, thanks again.

Filed an RO, New locks and security chain and bar. THIS upstairs neighbor also did his "secure the patio door trick" even tho she is second floor.[I ain't gonna "assume" that angle] not thought of. Portable Motorola walkie Talkies in of respective apts, since if on-line my landline is busy. She has 911, and some direct #'s to officers and other folks handy, like another fella here. ( Res Mgr), on her cell and landline. I also picked up a small marine air horn, I know how loud and attention getting these are.

Lets see, all "his" stuff is gone. She is filling out the paperdrill to return to college, and has asked that I give her a tour when I finish this semester of where I attend.

Even a healthy pc of rope on my balcony above hers. Contingency. Baby in baby seat comes up to me first. ( just turned 5 months old), Then she does.

She has a firearm. She has shot with her dad this gun. She wants to learn more so I have given dry fire lessons. When semester ends , we do live fire, go from there. I need to meet her dad in person, we have a discussion about a shotgun we need to talk about for her.

Res. Mgr is unaware of she is thinking about movoing. If she does I advised her dad to put lease, and the landline phone under his name, unlisted. Her car is not here, she and momma have swapped vehicles, and "that" BF does not know about the momma's new car.

[ yeah I been kinda figuring stuff out on this dealie]
Oh That BF is Big Too,( figures) the concern is the "associates he has that distributes certain products". [ pan to SG topped off - safety on, no cruiser ready, "snick and go" preferred by you know who]

So far so good. She lets me, and family know if she has a Doc appoint for baby or whatever. Basically she lets folks know of coming and going and expected times.

I think once this gal gets back in school it will really boost her self esteem. We are going to see if she can do most stuff at first on-line. I know how the system works, so I can help. If she can take on-line , be at home with baby...might be a good way to start out going back to school - ease into it. I'd "throw her in the fire" if not for the baby and the hassle of babysitting. This school does have babysitters , so we will investigate that as well.

Which reminds me, I need the takedown instructions of a Ruger P-89. Been awhile since I broke one of these down. [ I think that is the model #. ( 9mm with a Decocker]. Too many #'s , facts and figures on my brain right now.

Okay back to stuff that makes no sense. Can't blame the book being read upside down...this stuff all on-line...being on laptop...kinda hard to type with monitor inverted.:)

Thanks all.

Happy to hear you and the girl are OK, Steve.

Went through basically the same thing over the weekend myself, except the BF did not have a weapon--and was totally unarmed in the battle of wits.

Denny

it sounds like you did a good job. if i were in your shoes i wouldnt have been able to restrain myself like you did. i would have pulled the ccw and started shooting because at least that way he would no longer be a threat to this girl or anyone else he meets.

Glad it worked out well. You rose to the occasion and did what was needed.

You're a class act. More people should be willing to do what you had to do. If dirtbags got the idea that messing with someone would cause the whole neighborhood to come down on them, I think we'd have a lot fewer problems.

Steve,
You showed admirable restraint, and I think you did just fine! The lesson I'm taking from this is to NEVER assume a BG doesn't have a gun on him/her just because you don't see it. And, that using restraint CAN work.

Another thing this makes me wonder about is the wisdom of having the concealed carry age at 21, minimum. Young women (and young men) going off to college by themselves, who've been shooting for years, and been trained in gun safety (and who can shoot worth a darn) ought to be able to carry something.

Way to go!

P 89

I think that is the one that you have to slide lock and flip that do-hickey up in the mag well. should be on the backstrp side of the mag well. If that is the gun i am thinking of it took me quite awhile to realize I was missing a step. (darn rugers LOL).

By the way, nice job fella.

-- Adrenaline shakes... Gotta love it.

Thanks for the kind words.

Tam - Don't get me started on minimum age /restrictions...on anything :D

I am an older returning student. I get some excercise because I choose to excercise my 2A...and park off campus and walk. Others do also.

I don't care what age or gender a student is. They have to get from point A to point B. I mean I'm 49 and this semester I had one night class that did not end till almost 10:00 pm. Often I/we stayed til 11 pm in the lab.

I had a young lady in my class 20 yrs old. I walked her and another that is 28 from another class ( a CCW also). So a student works and then drives to school. Attends class then goes to work. Well the 20 yr old lives 30+ miles away.

She has a "right", tires go flat, cars break, accidents do happen on freeways and detours are taken. Kinda stupid this "restriction" dealie.

Yep we had a fella ( non student) get upset with a GF breaking up,[the old nobody can have you but me dealie] Retrieve a gun from vehicle [ NOT a CCW-er} popped 3 rds on campus " to get attention and make a point" up in the air. Great!
Well he got attention all right, won't have to worry about the GF. She won't have to worry about him, for awhile...

It is the person's intent - not the tool. Be it Gun, hammer, baseball bat , whatever.

So IMO why should not a GF, who filed a RO, works the late shift, travels at night 30+ miles to get home after class at night, whatever/ no matter...not have the ability to protect themselves.

Stuff happens off campus. There is a real world outside of campus, churches, and other places with 'restrictions'.

Idjits that make restrictions obviously don't know this.

Sick folks like jilted BF's, sex offenders, dope heads can figure this out.
The folks getting out early from local jails due to overcrowding, know this.

That is why good walking shoes/ tennis shoes, lockboxes and parking spots off campus were invented.

Crime is no respector of age, gender, time or location.

argghh...

The Good guy

Don't rethink being the good guy-if you're this intimidating when you're in the right, I'd hate to encounter you when you're not.

As for Karma, you came out of this unhurt, and you learned something. Trust me, most new lessons have a measure of pain involved. Now, if you had reincarnated as a ceramic coffee mug, you might have a complaint. ;)

Thank you for sharing.

Great job Steve, giving a righteous whooping to a very bad person is always a karmic good deed. :)

"Which reminds me, I need the takedown instructions of a Ruger P-89. Been awhile since I broke one of these down. [ I think that is the model #. ( 9mm with a Decocker]. Too many #'s , facts and figures on my brain right now."

-Check to make sure it is empty. Lock slide back. Remove magazine. The ejector is on a piece of sheet metal that needs to be pivoted downwards into the mag well (that is the secret trick). Pull the side back a little so that you can push the slide stop out. Remove the slide stop. Slide should come off the front of the frame now. Barrel is removed out the bottom of the slide. That is pretty much it.

Thanks for the kind words .

Thanks for instructions on the Ruger - hey I need the therapy.

It took me 4.5 hrs to take a final exam. Online exam and the servers on our end and the other kept going down...taking turns....arrghhh.

I need something mechanical, not wireless...I can do this...and I know where to come if I get stuck. :)

Okay semester is over...now where is the good Karma? I'm waiting. :)
