I decided to go ahead and put in my application. I am very excited :) I have owned a handgun in the past and thought about it but haven't gone through it. It was a pretty quick process compared to what i was expecting. Got my paperw work, headed to the post office for a money order, and then shot down and got printed. Took about an hour and a half for everything. 16 weeks seems a little excessive on the return, hopefully it will come a good bit faster than that. Now I just need to find a decent carry pistol.

I'm in PA, just moved to Montgomery county. I was going to go down and pick up the paper work tomorrow. I'm pretty set on purchasing a HK USP Tactical .45

Any advice on Concealed Carry? How to assure I'm safely carrying? Do they offer classes?

Congradulations guys.

Check with Packing.org (the site appears to be down now) to see what kind of reciprocation from other states you get with your licenses. I believe Georgia has really good reciprication, I don't know about Ohio. You may also want to take a look at a Florida non-resident CCW, I know that we have great reciprication. Many on THR get a non-resident FL CCW to go with their home state resident CCW.

Ah, getting the CCW permit. That's just a small step toward daily carry, tip of the iceberg.

Safety/training classes
clothes modifications/adjustments
holsters
range time
ammo
targets
deep soul searching about using the firearm in SD
purchase of various firearms until you find the 'right' one
knowledge of state/federal laws
getting over your initial 'carry paranoia'
gun safes

I could go on...;)

Way to go. The more people to get permits the better. I've been carrying for about 4 yrs now, and I am glad I finally (after years of procrastination) went ahead and jumped through the flaming hoops... I am not happy that most of us have to jump through those hoops to carry, but that's another story altogether...

I let my old CCW expire. Oops. Just re-applied as well. I don't carry all that often when i have a current CCW, but I feel it's an important thing to have. Don't have to worry about how to transport my pistols to the range, etc.

And when I do feel the need to carry, I'm good. There's rumor that my state, Virginia, is getting rid of the 5 yr term on CCW and making them lifetime. They've also lifted the restriction of one pistol a month to unlimited pistols a month for CCW holders.

Much of the information at PDO is out of date. For example, the Texas page hasn't been updated since 11/2005.

You can get current information at http://www.handgunlaw.us.

I received a pamplet on all of the GA code sections pertaining to the carry of firearms. I have wanted to put in for one since i turned 21, 3 years back, but thought it would be much more of a painful process. There is only one thing about it that i thought was weird. When i was getting finger printed, I was asked about tattoos. I have 4 of them. They were not concearned about what they were, just about where. I thought that was odd. "Ok, the perp we are looking for has a tattoo on his right and left arms. Go get him!" ;) The main reason I decided to go ahead and get it is beause of my wife. We are trying to have a child, and with all of the things you see in the news about pregnant women being victims due to the fact that they are pregnant. If someone attacked her, and I was unable to do something.... I think I would go insane.

16 weeks? Let me guess, Cobb county? When I applied for mine they told me 4 months too. It arrived in my mail box four months later to the day. Seems pretty clear to me that they are just sitting on them to discourage people from applying. Especially since other counties in GA get permits to the applicant in a much smaller (read: reasonable, and legal) amount of time. GA seems pretty bad about following the law when it comes to issuing CCW permits, temporary renewal licenses, etc...

Went to some Pawn shops today just to browse at some handguns... I decided I will wait till i find one ftf or at a show. I saw a hi point 9mm with a tag for 279.00 and said screw this. A few more prices were very high, but that one threw me off.

That's pretty funny on the HiPoint. Should've asked if you could pay him triple the actual cost...just because.

You may want to find a range that rents guns. Looking and fondling at a gun show is great but doesn't give you any idea how it shoots. I've certainly bought and sold a few after TRYING to like it.

You're not kidding. I'm still waiting for my permit to arrive and I've already spent a lot of money and a lot of time getting ready for it. I bought my first handgun and a couple holsters. I bought a .22LR handgun to extend my ability to practice beyond what I could otherwise afford to shoot. I've spent $50-60 on ammo and made at least two range trips every month for the last six months. I took a basic NRA pistol class. I spent a lot of time reading up on the law.

I also had to deal with the issue of gun safety and gun storage with kids in the house. This involved coming up with safe and secure storage. It also lead to buying my 9 year-old a .22 rifle and teaching her how to safely handle, shoot and care for guns. During this process, my wife decided to get her permit and bought a .38 Special revolver. That meant more ammo. I also bought a .22 rifle for my wife and a VEPR 7.62x39 for myself, partly due to H.R. 1022. Most recently, we joined a local gun club and we have our range orientation this coming Sunday.

In short, I can certainly understand why a lot of people say that getting a CCW costs at least a thousand dollars. I know that I've spent close to three times that much on guns, ammo, training and range time for my family. The great thing is that we now have this great new hobby that we can do together. Now, I can't wait for my youngest to get old enough for a .22 Cricket. It really can turn into an addiction. :)

Thought I would update a little. It has been a little over 2 months since I applied and have heard nothing. I called the probate court to see if i could check the status, and the lady was a straight up ass. Here is the convo...
"Hello Probate"
"Hi, yes, I applied for a concealed carry permit and would like to check the status if possible."
"It takes 16 weeks"
"I was told it could take up to 16 weeks, but usually does not, is that correct?"
"No, it takes 16 weeks. I know, because I am the one who signs them."
"Oh, ok then, is there anyway to tell what step they are on in the process?"
"No, 16 weeks, it takes 16 weeks. No, wait, I tell you what, Give me your name and I will check on it for you."
"No thanks, I suppose I will just wait for it. Thanks"

I figured if I gave her my name she would trash my application and make it take even longer. Ugh.

:p four days....god i wish. I have bought a few holsters, been to the range countless times, and have the gun I want to carry after a few trades....now just waiting on rockdale county to catch up. 2 more months to go at this rate, god i want to move.

Guys i got mine took a week, check with the A.T.F and they can tell you/or go online for your state,16 weeks unheard of sounds like the pawnshop i bought my Rem870 from,10 days, yea rightbut 16 weeks when all they have to do is check N.C.I.C. really they think people are not knowing the laws

A quick update.
I went to the probate 1.5 months back to check on the status of my permit. She told me that she had not received it back and to come back in a month or so. I went back this past Friday and was told that she had still not received it and that "I needed to go to the sheriff's dept and light a fire under their butts to see where it is."

So i go to the Sheriffs Dept. and the woman calls around. They got back all of my info and background checks on May 4th. She also said she has no idea why the woman at probate sent me there to check, that they had sent the info to probate on May 4th as well, and that I should have had my permit a while back.

So i head back over to the probate and the sheriffs dept must have called, because the dept clerk told me, "I just got off of the phone with them, and I must have mis placed, or never got your info, we will have to do everything all over again." By this point i was upset. I told her, "So I have to wait another 6 months because you lost my paperwork?" She said that she would only need to send off the ncis background check and I would be good to go. After she printed out my info wrong on the paper work 4 times, I finally filled it out and got it resent.

This has been a long and frustrating ordeal, and I hope that I get it within the next few days.

Is there anyone I could talk to about this? Are the probate positions elected or just hired?:cuss:
