Yep, just got it NIB for $525 after taxes. Now for the questions:

1. What's a good cleaning kit?

2. The case had some stickers on in that got ripped off and one child warning sticker that I took off. Well, the stickers left a bunch of sticky glue behind. What should I use to get all of that stuff off?

3. Can bullets ricochet off trees? I have a lot of woods behind my house and I went back there to find a little spot to shoot. I found 3 medium sized trees lined up with a little open spot about 25 yards away. I shot into the first tree and there were no exit holes. Is it possible that the bullets ricocheted(spelling?) off that tree? Or are the bullets most likely lodged in the tree?

my 2 cents...

1. any brand cleaning kit is ok. So long as they have all the basic parts, buy some extra patches and solvent and gun oil.

2. ususally wd-40 or just rubbing alcohol will take off sticky resudue (probably so will your cleaning solvent, diesel, ect. Dont use the wd40 for the pistol though...)

3. Yes, bullets ca ricochet off nearly anything. But most likely yours are just inside the tree a little ways. In my experience, it would have to be a small tree (or rotted) for a 9mm to go clean through. BTW, I usually find dead trees to pin my targets to. I am no tree hugger, but damaging the bark on trees can open them up to parasites and such.

Have fun with your 17!

1 Dunno. I buy everything separate (put together my own kit).
2 I'd try zippo fluid
3 Yes bullets can ricochet off of trees. Soft ground is probably the best backstop. Are you in a populated area? I wouldn't worry about a bullet coming back at you, but I would worry about a tree deflecting a bullet off into god knows where.

If you have doubt about where the bullets are going, you should not be shooting. However, if you're in the middle of freaking no where, I probably wouldn't worry.

Bullets can ricochet and they can lodge in a tree. A friend was hit in the eye by a ricochet off of a tree as a child. He got a large settlement from the person who fired the guns insurance, but was disqualified from his dream job. I don't KNOW of any cases of them going through trees but that could happen as well in the right circumstances.

Wood is better than no backstop but it's not perfect. Know what's behind your target.

Tried rubbing alcohol.... I don't know if I have any wd40, but I do think I have some carb and choke cleaner.... Would that work? Or would it eat the plastic? And I know whats behind the target..... More trees. If it manages to go through, I'm sure it'd hit another tree or go into the ground, before it hit a house.....

I have used carb and even brake cleaner on plastics before ... some ok some not. Also I have used goo be gone, and 'tar and bug remover' for similar situations.
You could always just spray paint over it :)
sometimes the plastic is fantastic

Depends on your area, and if you had night sites.

For my area... no
Although if you got night sites you didn't do TOO bad.

You got a decent deal. I went to glockworld.com and got their cleaning kit. It has served me well.

Congrats on the new Glock purchase.
I bought the Hoppes cleaning kit and the cleaner took the glue residue right off.

Congradulations on the new Glock. I got one about 2 years ago, Glock 17, like my sig. says, 5000+ rounds and not a single failure. You got yours for a decent price. As far as cleaning goes, Q-tips work well for getting into the small areas in the slide and frame.

another question... I'm a little reluctant to keeping one in the chamber when its by my bed. However, I do keep a full clip in it. Would it hurt the recoil spring to store it with the slide open? That way, if I need to load it quickly, all I'd have to do is push down the slide stop lever....

congrats on the new gun.
regular fixed sights and I live in atlanta
btw where did you get it from? i live in hinesville, i have been wanting to get that military discount on a 19 but the shop that has them is 4 hours away near atlanta. it is ed's pawn shop. is this where you got yours or some where else? thanks

I would keep it with empty chamber by the bed. If you not wake anough to rack, you shouldn't be shooting. I'ld also recommend keeping it out of sight, as a burglar might see ir while you're still asleep.

If your gun has some copper colored grease on the inner parts, don't clean that away. It is for breaking in.

Well, My bed is right next to a wall and the only way someone could get to it is if they crawl across the bed, thus waking me up. But will it put unnessacery stress on the recoil spring if I leave the slide open?

1. I'd say stay away from the "kits" and get a rod/brush/mop + some Break-Free CLP (what Glock uses at the factory), and maybe a little Hoppes oil to have just in case. As for the rod/brush/mop, you can really get anything, just make sure it's comfortable for you, and it's always preferred to get a coated rod of some sort. Kleenbore makes some good stuff, and their "Pockit 9mm/.357 mag" would have all three needed components. Keep in mind that .357 magnum, .38 special, and 9mm all are the same diameter.

2. To get the stickers off, take everything out of the box, and use a little "Goo Gone" sprayed on the edges of the stickers to get them started lifting. As you lift them, wipe a tiny bit more Goo Gone as you go on, and eventually it will all be off cleanly. Then wipe the whole thing clean. Try not to get Goo Gone on the foam though, as it could cause it to dissolve slightly.

3. Bullets can ricochet off of trees. The answer to your question though depends on a bunch of things, like the size of the tree, the type of tree, etc. You didn't say if there was an entry hole though. If not, then you just simply missed the tree entirely. If there is, shove a dowel in there to see how far it goes. Or simply shine a light in there to see the copper jacket reflection of the bullet. Doing so will answer your question.

I wouldn't keep the action open. Just make a decision to either keep one in the chamber or not. Personally I keep my home-defense gun loaded with one in the chamber always.

Then again, I live alone.

I use the cleaning kit that came with my Glocks (2, G17s and 1, G19C). For cleaner, etc., I like the MPro7. Prices here for the standard G17 are $479.00. Night Sights add extactly $50.00.
