Just ordered Twelve Garands from CMP: What should I expect??

I expect you will get whiners complaining they are not getting "their fair share".

Same people who would rather drive on the left side of the road so as to keep their agendas aligned.

The CMP has been shipping in around 45 days.
The Field grade rifles can be a lot rougher than what you might be expecting.
I took a chance on one and sent it back. CMP was very good about it. All 3 pieces of wood had cracks and splits, 25% finish was left and the trigger assembly would actually fall out in your hand. The only reason it wasn't a rack grade was the muzzle and chamber ratings
Another issue is that the Greeks loved carving crap into the stocks. Even the better rifles have carvings.
Good luck with the purchase.

If he sells eleven to people and spark their interest then he has furthered the mission of the CMP. Or if he lets twelve of his good hubbies shoot em!
Just bought my first safe this year. If you haven't got one it's time now. Go bigger than you think.

Gun value...

I went to the South Store in April and bought a service grade Springfield. This past weekend my son and I went to a militaria show here in HSV and saw one identical to it (all SA but with H&R bolt, CMP wood) with a $1000 price tag on it. We're only an hour or so drive from the South Store. Get even farther from the store and that price likely goes up a little more.

Incidentally, I had a very proud dad moment there. My son is four. I was looking at a Garand and someone around us called it a "gun". In his little, angelic to me voice, he looks and me and says "Daddy, that's not a gun. It's a rifle". It'll be his rifle when he gets older. Much older.

A visit from the BATF&E if you sell any of them.
WRONG!
They will be his personal property, to do with as he pleases. Now if he "engages in the business" of selling for profit, there will be a problem.
Just don't sell them all at once, maybe?

Congrats! I just joined the GCA and watched the DVD. Still getting paperwork squared away to pick up my first CMP Garand or two in service or service special grade with a few thousand rounds. Hope there are still a few gems when my order is processed! I hate the idea of mail order but can't visit the stores.

you sure jump in with both feet, dontcha?
Always do:D.

I know the feeling. I actually looked at plane tickets before I sent my order....I would love to wade through endless rifles and pick out gems. Alabama is just a little too far out of my way right now (live in NW Washington).

Having sold most of my rifle and magazine collection to fund this purchase (scary black rifles), I am in no hurry to sell anything. 10-20-30 years down the road? Who can say, but for now I will enjoy a collection. However, out of 12 Garands, if 1 or 2 are real dogs compared to the others, they may be sold or dismantled and used to make "corrects" out of the others. Same as any purchase with a C&R. Order 10 Mausers, keep the 5 or 6 best, liquidate the rest.

I wish there was a discount on large orders, haha:neener: My gun budget is gonna look like my hairline, gone but not forgotten and I have hopes it will grow back.

I would like to be able to afford one, okay two but I'm willing to start with one. Plus a few thousand rounds and all the other necessities.

This is my rifle. There are many like it....

Looks like you own a few of those also!

Enjoy.

Btw, if those field grades need any freshening up it is a blast, speaking from experience.

Yeah I live in the northwest too. Don't have the time or money to make a 4000 mile round trip for purchasing a rifle or two. Oh well! I've heard most rifles people get from the CMP exceed the minimum standards listed in each grade.

BTW, when you function check be sure the guns' rear sights will stay in place during firing, after you have properly adjusted them.

IME one of the most likely trouble spots for a used M1 is a bad rear sight pinion (detent nub worn down and/or spring is dead), and worn serrations on the reciever ear for the rear sight pinion.

When the CMP was the old DCM, the limit on M1 Garands was one, per LIFETIME.

One of the local shops was using as a selling point that the numerous Garands that they were selling were "hand-picked" at the CMP South store. Last I knew that sort of thing could get you banned. I guess things have changed.

The DCM didn't have to make money or even support itself, the CMP does.
They are, of course, working themselves out of a job. Selling multiple rifles for wheeler dealers to cherry pick and speculate on is rapidly depleting the inventory and when they are gone, there will not likely be enough for the CMP to do to stay in operation.
Back when the limit was five M1s, a wheeler dealer here signed up his whole family and they each bought five. He high graded 25 rifles, swapping stuff around to generate a few "correct" guns with same make, same period parts, sold them for a big profit and sold the remaining mixmasters for small profits.

When they got in the Model 52s there was a guy who walked up to the rack, wrapped his arms around as many as he could reach, and staggered to the checkout counter with them.

I was ready to buy one of the used grade Kimber 82s til a guy ahead of me picked the best five out of the ones on the rack and bought them all. The rest were dogs.

Jackal, The CMP Forum has a wealth of knowledge within its membership.

Since the Garands are essentially 'parts guns', you might want to read the posts by a gent named 'Orlando'. He has some comments regarding the stock and wood furniture on Garands that are well worth reading. Orlando is one of many who just plain flat dig the Garand.

You're gonna have fun. You're gonna need more ammunition.
