Just scored on ammo! Smells like ammonia though....

That autocorrect typo was a fantastic attention-getter! I'll admit that I wouldn't have clicked on this thread otherwise. As it was, I thought ammonia had some significant connection to firearms of which I was previously unaware :D. (I know you can use ammonia sprays to counteract the effects of corrosive ammo, but I've never heard of ammonia being desirable enough for firearms that someone would make a thread about finding a bunch of it!)

Ammonia is one of the combustion products of smokeless propellant. Is that significant enough?

Yes, but gun owners don't buy it by itself for that purpose. That's what I was referring to; I though maybe there was a common use for it that I didn't know about.

Ammonium nitrate is more or less used in fertilizer....and as an oxidizer in solid fuel rocketry.

Too many DHS no-no words in this thread for me...hold on someones at my door...see you guys in GitMo I heard it's nice this time of year. Just kidding.

Congratulations on finding the rarest substance on earth, nonexistantonium or to the layman, 22lr.

There are rounds that have a pretty heavy smell of ammonia or some other chemical when firing (that's not encountered with most other ammo).
I've had FN 7.92x57JS from the '50s that had a smell that one could describe as similar to ammonia. Some of the Russian commercial stuff can have a smell to it as well when using (burning electrical tape, etc).
