Hi,
I'm contemplating buying a German Mauser. The price is 500 and this is the text the guy sent to me.
" There are 3 nazi bird mark visible.the number on the bolt and barrel are 3829 And the but of the stock theres a proof mark i cant make out but it not been punch over or filed. The serial number on the stock 2907 Thats the origanal number. all the others were added later model98 Was the only number orginal stamped in the rifle. the others come thourgh the later wars it was in. That was some of the tons of researched sites on the net said."
I'd like to see what everyone thought about these codes due to my lack of knowledge on the Mauser. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Will

From the description it sounds like a German mauser, that was reworked post war in yugoslavia.

My guess as far as value is 300 +/- depending on condition.

The marking "Mod 98" (Exactly that, not "GEW 98" or "KAR 98") was used ONLY on the K.98k. Many were left in Yugoslavia by retreating/surrendering German troops and later refurbished by the Yugoslavs for their own use, along with pre-war Model 24's reworked as the Model 24/47 and Yugoslav-made Model 48's.

Preduceze 44 means "Factory 44" the Tito-era name for the government factory in Kragujevac where Model 48's were made and the other rifles refurbished and upgraded. More recently, the Remington 798 was made there. (It is part of the same industrial complex that produced the (ready for this?) glorious Yugo!)

Ok, thank you both for your input. I thought 500 was a tad bit steep for a Yugoslavian, he claims that it's worth every bit of 600.

A good condition, original K.98k could easily run over $600 and an extra nice pre-war one could go to $1600 or more. But the Yugoslavs, by rebuilding and marking those rifles pretty much destroyed the collector value. I would put it in the $250 range.
