I finally had a chance to fire my new-to-me Kahr K9. I shot about 20 rounds of Gold Dot 124 gr. +P and 50 rounds of Winchester 115 gr. FMJ. I was pleased overall. The recoil, even with +P rounds, was not bad, and I was able to control the pistol even when firing rapidly. The trigger was also pretty sweet.
I had a couple of malfunctions, both magazine-related. One was the first time I used a brand-new Kahr factory mag I'd just bought. The mag spring seemed stiff. I think a bit of lubrication and some breaking in will cure this. The second was when I accidentally bumped the mag release with my support hand. I tried to pay more attention to my grip, and afterward I did not experience such a malfunction again. Gaining some familiarity with the gun will hopefully cure this as well. Toward that end, I hope to put at least another 100 rounds through it next week.
I fired most of my shots at 7 yards, since this is a close-in defensive handgun. Even fired off-hand (I had no rest with me), the shots clustered pretty tightly on the targets. When I backed the targets to 10 and 15 yards, the groups opened up a bit, but I think there's plenty of accuracy here for the intended purposes of this gun.
My only real problem (assuming the mag troubles get ironed out with more use) was that the gun consistently shot low. Windage was dead on, but at 7 yards the point of impact was about 2 1/2 inches below point of aim. At longer ranges, this increased to 3-4 inches. Given the general accuracy of the gun, I guess I can work around it shooting a bit low, but I'm wondering if there's something I can do to rectify this. The pistol has fixed sights, and for its purpose I want to keep it that way. Would shifting to 147 gr. bullets have much effect? Any other suggestions?
