Kel-tec RFB rifle - a write-up

I bought a few extra fal mags while awaiting this rifle. A couple of thoughts
just popped up. I wonder how hot the handguard gets (like the old Bush bp
did), and if there's any possibility of gas burping up around that top cover
where my cheek/right eye will be?

Oh lord, I can't wait. I was thinking about buying a second FAL or something, but...

Sorry, DSA. Kel-Tec one-upped-you. Assuming, of course, that this new design can roll with a tried-and-true piece like the FAL. If so, my FAL carbine is probably going to "reserve" status. If the Kel-Tec doesn't run...well, somebody would've made my dream rifle, but made it poorly.

I'll have to dig out the crying pillow. :p

A bit pricey for a plastic 308. I like Kel Tec in general, but if they ever want to truly complete with other 308 semis...KT better change their price point on this rifle.

Hahahaha! :)

When considering the closest thing to a competitor is the FN FS2000 in a lighter caliber for $2200 (actual, not suggested retail), Kel-Tec prices- especially taking into account that their MSRP usually ends up being about 30% higher than what they go for, real world- seem very fair.

Are they ***REALLY*** thinking about production of the RFB in 6.5 Grendel? Does anyone have any confirmation of this from Kel-Tec?

I’m 6’4” at 220lbs with a pretty big frame.

This weekend I took out my two new rifles.

The FN FS2000 is really nice. The forward eject system takes about five shots to get used to, it simply works, drops all of the brass in front of you. If I shoot across the truck bed then all of the brass is in the bed. Field stripped the FS2000 at the end of the weekend, lubed everything and saw no signs of wear. As shipped it seems that the rifle is dry providing people with the impression of a spongy trigger. There are two metal rods running from the trigger to the back of the stock, once you lube the plastic on plastic trigger – the triggers feels great. I have an EOTech mounted towards the front of the rail, with this I’m able to push golf balls up the hillside all day long. Really like the rifle, no regrets, fits me perfectly. Nice to have so much accuracy in such a small package, this is now my go to rifle.

The DSA SA58 FAL is REALLY nice. Took them just 12 weeks to build the rifle and deliver to my local shop. Medium Contour Barrel, 21”, Para Stock, Extreme Scope Mount, Night Sites, Belgian Short Flash Hider, 34” folded and 43” full length. The rifle is lighter than I had expected. I am very impressed with the workmanship and quality. Ran 70 rounds through this weekend to break in the barrel – took lots of time cleaning in between rounds. For my frame, I need to add an inch onto the end of the stock. This is my first .308 and I am hooked.

I’m going to wait before buying optics for the FAL, maybe a scope. If the .308 bull-pup becomes available then that will be my next rifle. Would be nice to have both .223 and .308 bull-pup designs.

Be safe, BSR

Quote from the article below: "Initially offered in .308, the RFB will be offered in .223, 6.5mm Grendel, 6.8mm SPC and 7.62x39mm."

From from Max Popenkers writeup: "As of now (April 2007), Kel-tec is tooling up for first pre-production batch of RFB. At the same time, Kel-tec is investigating smaller- versions of the same design, adapted to 'intermediate' calibers such as 7,62x39, 5,56x45 / .223, 6,5 Grendel or 6,8x43 Rem SPC. This weapon will be significantly lighter and more compact, retaining same ambidexterity and high barrel length to overall length ratio of the RFB."

So that's twice now that I've read that the smaller version is in the works.

Thanks for the writeup Max. :)

Thanks to very generous help of George Kellgren, the master mind of the Kel-tec company, i made a more or less detailed write-up on their .308 forward ejection bullpup RFB rifle.

Max, most of the weapons on your great website are current or previous military issue. By adding the RFB, does that mean Kel-Tec has received a military contract for this model already?

I wouldn't think so. Max has other commerical designs on his site. Most are American, since the US is one of the very few countries that feature civilian-specific service-type weapons.

Note that the Bushmaster M17, Ruger Mini-14, and a number of shotguns and handguns on the site were never adopted by military forces, and many were never used by police in any significant numbers. It just catalogs what's out there, basically.

Very cool, I'm eager to see them and try them. I'm not sure what to make of the price. Kel-tec hasn't wowed me with their quality yet, in fact I'm overall pretty disappointed in general. I don't know if the higher price is going to make it more of a gamble or give them more money to use to make a more solid product. I'm hoping for the best.

Why do they use FAL mags and not G3 mags?

The FAL mags will lock in without requiring as much magwell area as the G3
mags would. The FAL mags are tough heavy gauge steel. Many of the cheap
G3 mags are aluminum. I own both types and the FAL mags come across as
far beefier.

I just heard back from Kel-Tec. I was told that they'd be producing a 6.5 Grendel version of the RFB in late 2008 or early 2009. Let's hope that it is sooner, to avoid a possible ban imposed by the Dems.
