This is usually a quiet area but yesterday there was an attempted robbery and a stabbing in the parking lot of the Wallmart in Houghton, MI.

According to the local paper, the Daily Mining Gazette, at around 2:45 p.m., Tuesday a 92 year-old man was sitting in his car in the parking lot. Some low life walked up and tried to take his wallet. The 92 year-old said no, and the criminal cut his throat.
Then he left him there and the old man walked toward the store for help. He was taken to the hospital and a local radio station says he's in fair condition today.

The store was evacuated and closed until about 7:30. A K-9 unit went over the area. The suspect wasn't found until later (somewhere else) but two suspects are in jail now.

I've sat in that parking lot many times waiting for my wife to finish shopping. I think I have been more observant than the guy who was attacked but the story is still a wake-up call.

My wife, 12 year-old son and I had been on the road for a fishing and museum attending trip. We had intended to go to Walmart to drop off some film, but were running late so skipped it. Even though we would have gotten there a half hour after the attack, that's another wake-up call.

Coffee Bar Attack

Last week in Dallas, KDFW TV news aired security camera footage of a man walking into a gas station store to get some coffee. A half second behind Man #1 is Man #2 who follows Man #1 into the coffee bar area and proceeds to stab him. Man #1 falls to the floor and holds up his hands to ward off the knife. Man #2 walks past the initial victim and forces the clerk to open the register, and then he walks out with the cash.

All of this was bold as brass with zero effort at disguise. The BG knew he was being filmed and did not care. As far as I know he's still on the loose.

Man #1 was in Condition White, but there was nothing on the tape that really indicated the BG was up to something until he hauled out the knife. By that time he was behind Man #1.

It was obvious on the tape that even after being stabbed, Man #1 was still functional. Had either the victim or the clerk been armed, the BG would have been DOS. :banghead:

Scary stuff!

had a friend killed recently by a knifewielder.. what can I say- he was armed, he scored COM hits, yet the knifeman got in a fatal stab..maybe it's a case of win some, lose some.

Complacience kills... act like sheeple... die like sheeple.

I suspect we are all guilty of complaciency from time to time... how many times have we said "I'm just going down to the "Rob 'n" Go' I don't need my sidearm....

A wake-up call.

Very sad stories....

I don't know if we'll always be able to perceive a threat in time and respond..but carrying DOES up the odds.....or at LEAST I'll be taking some scumbag with me......
At the Walmart we go to,a few weeks ago some dirt hole tried to grab a women's purse..he didn't let go and he dragged her with his car for about 100 feet.....we live in a pretty safe area..we thought.....stay aware folks.:(

Before I even put the seatbelt on, the doors are locked.

I understand that the victim was sitting in his car, when approached by the thug. Awareness in this case would have been helped by precaution.

A later story in the paper said the older gent was unlocking his car door when the thug approached, pushed him into it and demanded cash.
When the older gent refused the thug reached in and slashed his throat.

Being shoved into the car would make it tougher to respond, I think.

Still points up the need to be alert.

Here's what I typically do:

Have the key ready, get in and immediately start the car and get rolling. I can put the seatbelt on on the fly and I don't want it restricting me should I need to move around the car if someone comes up to me.

Hindsight is 20/20, but if you're shoved into the car, sliding to the other side would give you more room and get you closer to an exit, plus you'd have your legs toward the BG and a swift heel to the face never feels good.
