I'm about to relocate from Washington to South Carolina. I checked at packing.org, but I'm a little unclear on "gun-friendly peaceable journey laws," or lack therof. I am moving 2 rifles and 4 pistols. I was planning on having one of the pistols in the glove box. The states I'm traveling through are Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illannoy, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Caroliina. If someone could give me some advice as to how to move without obtaining a felony  , it would be much appreciated.

I can speak definitively only about Illinois. A gun in the glovebox in the Land of Lincoln earns you an immediate UUW felony. Keep all your firearms unloaded, encased, and in the trunk.

Do you have any concealed handgun licenses?

Be sure to check out the Car/Gun law summary at http://www.packing.org/state/index.jsp/all+united+states.

If all else fails, there is always 18 USC Sec 926A:

"Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver's compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console."

It looks like Wyoming, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois will be a problem.

None of them are a problem legally if you unload your guns and lock them in a case in the trunk, the problem will be illegal enforcement of state law, contrary to federal law, most likely in Illinois. Title 18 of the US code gives you the legal right to transport through states which are unfriendly to guns, if you follow the letter of the law. Print a copy of this up and lock it in the trunk with your guns. Insist that any police officer who wants to arrest you read it. It's no guarantee you won't get arrested, but if you do it might help in your lawsuit against the police department responsible
