lead projectiles & 7.62x54r

Looking at several loading charts including what came with my Lee dies for the 7.62x54r & for the life of me I find none that is using a lead projectile.

I'm going to use my .312 185gr. Lee mold sized ofcorse but everything I read is for jacketed bullets.

Can I use the same chart I find for the 180-185gr. & maybe drop .25gr?
 
I used 10 - 15 grains of unique and 150 grain spire point for a good 50 yard plinking load.

Paper patch your bullet and shoot it at jacketed velocities with jacketed load data. It will also help you get a better bore fit.
 
I highly recommend buying the Lyman 4th Edition Cast Handbook linked to in Post #2 if you are going to load cast bullets for handguns or rifles. It's simply the best current source of data. I have the 3rd Edition Lyman manual and have found older manuals over the years which are also useful because they supply a wider range of powders for use in rifles.
 
Oh wellllllll

You have a great advantage with the 54R, it has a rim. No problems with headspace in lighter loads...

If you are going to use "full weight" bullets there are very, very forgiving powders. Greased lead bullets have much, much less resistance/friction. Lyman manuals usually have a load with 4895, either IMR or H... I was surprised to find loads for W748 too with lead bullets...

Today Hodgdons seems to have the distribution of all powders and if you go to the web site they have posted many, many pages of data.

Your case capacity is close to that of .30/40 Krag and .303 British. NO I did not say you could substitute data directly but if you cut the starting loads say 5 grains and WORK UP CAREFULLY...

Then there is the silly. You can load 00 buckshot over a couple grains of Bullseye or just a primer for popping rats in the barn... Luck. Happy Holidays. Happy Trails.
