I went to the gun range with my pistol today, illinois. Out of convenience I put four loaded mags in the case, gun unloaded, transported locked in rear of vehicle. When I got to the range the attendant asked me to open the case which I did. He then asked if I was LEO, I am not. He then said that I had comitted a class four felony by transporting loaded mags inside the case with the unloaded gun and if I was caught that I would need a lawyer costing thousands of dollars etc. etc....
I told him that I was not aware of that, and thanked him for pointing that out.Thinking he was wrong, I wasn't interested in arguing and just wanted to shoot. So went home and researched.

According to this the gent was flat out wrong. Or am I an idiot and missing something?

Transport loaded mags elsewhere than with the gun.

Go to another range, preferably one without "attendants"

<...> It is perfectly, 100% legal to transport your mags in the case with the weapon.

I'd print out that flyer from the ISP and take it to the guy. Maybe he'll quit doling out false information.

Print it out and mail it to him with a nice note thanking him for his concern, but that he was misrepresenting the law and that the copy should help him from straying into providing incorrect information.

Also send a copy to the operator with the same note to the individual.

I don't want to say the name. But I will print out the ISP flyer and bring to the owner. Irks me that someone in the buisness would give false info like that, they should know better.

Well I'm not shy. I've been misinformed at BSR a ton of times. This range is also a store front. My last visit I asked to see a Stag AR. He handed it to me stating "this model comes with the "sniper trigger"". Trying not to laugh out loud I said "oh ya, how much?" he came back with $1500.......for a standard carbine. If this is not the range you are talking about it sounds very similar. Also the gun comunity is full of opinionated misinformation. Alot of times starting with "I heard". I always preload mags. Especially if I have to go to a "pay by the hour" range.

"Well I'm not shy. I've been misinformed at BSR a ton of times."

it's not BSR, I am in a suburb of Chicago. I have bought many guns from this place over the years and used the range on occasion. First "not good" expierience.

The sad part of this is that it could have been true. "Made you look!"
I would have a printed copy of that PDF in the gun case everytime I went there.
Just curious, but is there a specific policy/law that requires them to check your guns prior to use? At my local indoor range, they have never asked to check my weapons. They do check rifle ammo to ensure that it won't damage the range.

Ha, It did make me look.
As far as inspecting my gun ammo etc... It has been hit or miss depending on who was working. The funny thing is that I bought the ammo from them in bulk a week earlier.

I have printed two copies of the law, one for my truck and one going to the range owner. If they have a range policy about not bringing loaded mags or whatever, I am fine with that. Being falsely accused of a felony is over the top IMO.

Maybe my next firearm related purchace will be elsewhere.

Tennessee is high on my list, work had me there for a month. The local gun shop was one of the best I have been in. Going to Texas next month to vacation and look around, my older brother just retired there and loves it. Illinois blows....
