Lee powder dispenser

The instructions for the Lee Powder Dispenser say for the first time you use it to fill it with powder and drain it so as to coat the insides. This seems to be a pain. Is it really necessary?

They are trying to get the graphite on the powder to coat the inside surfaces. You can do the same by buying powdered graphite and thoroughly 'painting' the insides, and I mean thoroughly. It not only helps the powder to flow, but as a conductor graphite helps control static electricity.

Is it absolutely essential? I think so, but you don't have to do it if you don't want.

Not sure what kind of powder dispensor you've got their, I use the Lee auto disk. I didn't do a fill and drain with mine. It's worked fine for me. Other models may need it done, I don't know.

What Ants said. You only need to do it once when new.

I filled mine and threw some charges to see how consistent it was, then took it off and rotated it to the open position and drained it. Then I checked it again and started loading with it. Just needs to have that graphite coating the inside walls.

It only takes a little while, and only needs to be done once. Set it for the largest charge possible and have at it. Dump the powder into a small container instead of empty brass.

I used some graphite for my Perfect Powder Measure. Made a big difference in consistency. I didn't for my Auto Disk. I do need to order a new hopper, though, and when I do, I'll probbly dust the inside with a little graphite, just to help "slick" it up a bit.

Also, powdered graphite is a very good around-the-house dry lubricant. Not so great for guns, but good around the house.
