I'm a lefty and I'm looking to pick up a left handed bolt action rifle for mostly range shooting, home defense (just in case shtf and all that), and maybe some hunting. Any good recommendations? I've read a little about the Remington 700 and some Savages. Not looking to spend that much, just something reliable and fairly accuarate

Im sold on Savage.
For the money you cant beat it with a stick.
Im partial to the ones with the wooden stocks. I just dont like the feel of the ones with the polymer stocks.
Some rifles with polymer stocks I do like. Just not the Savages I have shot.

+1 Savage 10FLP here in .308 . .love it. The ONLY knock I can come up with is that if you get the itch for a nice higher end stock for it you're SOL.

That being said, the stock 10FLP will shoot under and inch with my handloads all day long and I've shot a few groups off of the bench under .5. (and I'm a terrible shot)

Have a god one,
Dave

I'm left-handed, and have a Savage 110 in .30-06 that has been very, very good to me. I also have a Remington 700 BDL, but it's become a safe queen--it looks prettier, but the Savage has kept me fed.

You didn't say if you wanted new or used? There are all kinds of good LH bolt guns out there. I have a Remington 788LH and its a fine shooter. Any of them will treat you well. I mean they are a bolt gun there isn't much to go wrong with them.

Just a thought on hunting used left handed rifles: they are rare and their shelf life is vanishingly short. If you find something you like, don't dither.

I'm a lefty and own a lefty 700. It's a great, and very accurate rifle. But this is my first, only, and last left bolt rifle. Most of my bolt experience is with right bolt guns, and I find it easier to both load, and shoot a right-side bolt... both from a bench rest, and in the field.
Also, when I buy another boltie, it'll likely be a Savage. If you haven't tried it yet, their accu-trigger is waay better than any standard 700 trigger IMO.

Savage.

I could repeat what is said above, but that would be repetitive. I will say that Savage is what I recommend to my lefthanded students.

Savage all the way! I have a Remington 700 as well but overall for the money Savage is to hard to beat!

I have Remington, Savage and a CZ in lefty. If I was looking used it would be another 700 for sure used and probably new, but then price can dictate what I purchase too. My Savage is OK for the money but not IMHO as good of a rifle or as a well made, or have the feel I like as an older Remington or the new CDL's I have handled. Rugers LH look good but I have not shot or owned one. Browning, Howa and Weatherby are all Japan made which I avoid if I can, Not that they are not good too it is a personal thing I guess, I try to buy American mostly.
If CZ ever makes 550 in LH I want one because how much I like the CZ I own.

if you want anything other than a long action savage is pretty much your only option as far as I can tell. (or it was 4 or 5 years ago.) I love mine. of course it's a highly customized one I found on a pawn shop ;)

I’m left handed myself and either had or still have the following

Savage, Browning, Remington, Sako and Sauer. Only three remain and two will never be parted with. The Sako and Sauer are the finest hunting rifles I have ever handled that is until I obtain a Blaser. LOL

I'm a lefty too, but thank God the first time I picked up a rifle to shoot it I did it right handed. Funny thing though, I couldn't hit the target until my Dad's friend noticed I was closing my right eye. Once I got my right eye on the sights I never looked back.

You'll be doing yourself a favor if you learn to shoot right handed, especially when you get into semi autos. Besides the resale of left handed guns are pretty much lower than the regular ones and much harder to find. Every time I see a lefty working the bolt I'm remembered about my first shooting experience.

Good luck.

+1 Savage

I just got a savage 10GLXP3 -

Went for the combo to get the monto carlo wood stock - knowing the glass would not be left on it .... but you can always have a 3x9 laying around and the pricing was not adverse to the standard 11GL and FL models

Chambered in .243 ..... like the round versatility from small varmint shooting with 58 gr to white tail with 100+ gr fits my usage.

Toped it with a Ken Farrell 20 moa 1 piece base, Warne Tactical rings, and a Bushnell 3200 elite 5x15x44 Mil Dot w/ Target Tourets.

Need some Range time to determine if I need to bed the lug and advance the pillars to get the 1/2 moa ill be happy with. Plan on having some reach out there and touch um with this one my first and likely my last bolt gun trying to do it right the first time

Let the Fun Begin

Callo65;

I'm left/left, as in naturally left handed and left master eyed. When I started competitive shooting, as a teen in the 60's, there was no way in the world I, or my family, could affort a competitive LH gun. Since then, it's been my life's work to amass a good left battery.

If hunting is important, then I'm not going to suggest anything sub-caliber to the 6mm's. My Remington 788 LHB in 6mm Remington is also one of the most accurate rifles I've ever owned. Remington no longer produces this model so you are, perforce, on the used market.

If cost is a real factor, do this: Run don't walk, to Ray Tanner sports in Jamison PA, & order a Tikka left bolt in .30-06. I got mine delivered to myself for a total cost of $399.99. You will not beat that price in today's market. However, I'd also be surprised if many are left. Call, the number is: (215)343-3103. My gun will become a 6.5 X 55 Swede, but that's another story.

The CZ 527 is also available in LHB, in .223. I've got one & am working up loads for it at this time. This is not my only CZ rifle, and I don't expect it to be my last either. However, my personal opinion is that if hunting is a major factor on your want list for a rifle, you'll be fairer to the game by using a larger caliber.

And just to put a previous rumor to rest, I've got a .338 Winchester magnum, and not on a Savage. In fact, I've never owned a Savage centerfire rifle.

There's other guns in the battery, but they aren't germain to your objective it seems to me.

Rangerruck;

CZ's are great guns, but. The only CZ left hand bolt platforms are either the 452 series in rimfire, or the 527's in .223 & .204. Unless you know something I don't, and I just checked the CZ site for info, the 550's still haven't been released in an LHB platform. As soon as that does happen, I will own at least one though.

+1 on Tikka, They make excellent rifles with a super smooth action. That IS going to be my next rifle. I looked into Remington 700 actions for their parts availability, but have since decided to go with Tikka, their synthetic stock isn't shabby and it has a detachable mag system already oh all the Tikka's come with an accuracy guarantee, 3 shoots in 1" at 100 yds. Remington and Savage don't on their SPS and FLPs.
