LEO handguns

Where does one go to buy the old LEO handguns? I see they are much cheaper and if in good condition, I'd love to see what they have. I've just never had any idea where to go. I'm in Texas if there are different ways for different states. Thank you for your help!

Check the Saxet Gun show schedule as to when they will be in Houston. Buds gun shop online has them sometimes. At that gun show I have seen new Glocks priced at $460. What exactly are you looking for?

Local police suppliers (that sell firearms, not the ones that are just uniform shops) take the old guns the officers don't buy & resell them as part of the deal for the department order.

Do you have any friends that are cops?

One of my dad's good buddies is a county cop and when they get new issue firearms the department allows them to purchase their old issue firearm back at the same price that they are going to get from the supplier on the trade in.

His friend isn't really into guns other than his personal duty carry so every time he gets something new he buys his old back and sells to my dad at his price. In the last 10-15 years he has gotten a Sig p226, P229, P232, Colt Detective Special in .38 special, and a Ithaca 37 D.S. Police riot shotgun. He has gotten some pretty smoking deals on them too.

If you can find someone willing to do that, that would be your best bet. The best thing is you know who owned it, how much it was shot, and if they took care of it well. I know in most cases they are carried a lot and shot a little, which makes them excellent buys.

As for dealers, yeah your going to get an inflated price however they are usually still pretty good deals. I see them at Bud's and JG like others have said but I would also check locally, I seem them at a local shop quite a bit and that's probably the ones I would go for since you can actually check the one your going to buy out yourself instead of say a vague grading system like JG uses.

Cabelas often does rebuilt revolvers, seen lots of S&Ws model 10s in their stores, sometimes, if that is your sort of thing, good values

One factor is that in the Houston area, you are in a region where LEOs traditionally by their own duty firearms. Houston PD and Harris County Sheriff's Office, plus most of the smaller agencies in the area, share this practice. Police agency turn-ins will have to come from other places, so check with the distributors who sell such weapons. Individual officer's guns, of course, will be available, but they will just be mixed in with all the other used guns.

I buy my LE trade-ins from a local gunshop that also deals with police orders. Because we have a lot of local and federal agencies working up here near the Canadian border, that's a lot of guns! They don't generally mark their LE trades on the shelves, but will gladly point them out to you, (if the price doesn't already clue you in). I also have good results just by asking if they "have any law enforcement trade-in Sig P-220s in .45 Auto...," for instance. They duck in back and often come out with some nice (and relatively inexpensive) stuff. So far, I've bought two P-220s, a P-226, S&W 4516 and a nice little Remington 870 police shotgun circa 1982 in cherry condition. If the gun, like my 870 for instance, comes with agency markings, so much the better!

I like my guns to be 1) reliable and 2) have a history. LE guns certainly have both. They're generally reliable because they've been looked after by department armorers and the history is obvious. Now if they could only tell me lies and war stories around the gun cleaning table...
