Yes........

At Liberty University you see plenty of students with cell phones and backpacks, but no guns.

That could soon change, as LU relaxes its ban on concealed weapons.

"The more we looked at it, the more sense it made," said Liberty University Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr.

LU's Board of Trustees voted last week to allow concealed weapons on school property. Until now students, faculty, and everyone else have been leaving their guns at the LU Police Department.

The new policy allows anyone with a concealed carry permit to have their legal firearm on campus.

"It adds to the security and safety of the campus, and it's a good thing," Falwell said.

The change won't allow students to carry a gun inside school buildings, including dorms, classrooms, and even the football stadium.

But others will have that privilege. A handful of faculty and staff members will be designated by LU Police to have weapons indoors.

"If something, God forbid, ever happened like what took place at Virginia Tech, there would be more than just our police officers now who could deal with it," said Falwell.

Falwell says the new policy has wide support from students.

"For girls or gentleman who feel uncomfortable around campus at dark times, they have a sense of security knowing that if they need to protect themselves they have that available," said Nathan Skaggs, a Liberty University Freshman.

Many we spoke with like the idea, but some do have concerns.

"You always have that one crazy person," said LU Sophomore Judah Murray. "But as long as we are wise about how we issue the permits, I believe that it could be a very good thing."

Students have been asking for a change to LU's concealed carry ban since 2008.

Falwell says LU Board of Trustees considered allowing anyone with a concealed carry permit to bring a gun inside school facilities. Ultimately the board felt that change wasn't appropriate.

In Michigan, college and university dorms and classrooms are pistol free, but CCW is permitted elsewhere on campus including in buildings. This does not look like a great step forward to me. If one is not going in a building, why go on campus other than to walk a dog.

Liberty University is a very Christian school. How can they square this with Jesus's teachings of pacifism? The Bible's pretty clear about this.

Come on, are you serious?
Have you ever read the Bible?
Remember the part about sell your cloak and buy a sword?
Or the part where Jesus drove corrupt people out of the temple with a whip?

Well, at the risk of derailing this and having to lock the thread and maybe even ban myself I suggest you do a little more research on that.

Let's try to stay on the topic at hand.

One more school gets it, and that's progress.

"If you do not own a sword, sell your cloak and buy one."

The bible is clear about not lifting a hand, and knowing when to turn the other cheek. I am not religious or particularly well-read in that regard, but I do not remember any sermons that suggested I should kneel and accept death when I could possibly prevent it from coming to others. Pacifism does not always exclude self defense.

For the students, not a great step forward at this moment. But it's relaxing, and it's a step. Once they realize that it only helps, and the students keep pressure on it, it could get better.

I have a few friends that go to that College, visited it once. It is a nice enviroment. Currently you can check your guns in with the campus police and check them out to shoot them at the range the police use on campus. I wanted to go to that school but decided to stay at home. Not sure why they don't allow it in buildings though, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

I was just going off of Jesus's words (Mathew 5:9, 5:39, 5:44 & Luke 22:49 5-1), not the Old Testament. Jesus wasn't around then.

Texas: I don't want to turn this thread into a theological discussion, but Liberty U. seems to be going against the principles it purports to support (Jesus's teachings). I've read the Bible enough to know Jesus was pretty clear about pacifism. I can't find anything in the Bible where he contradicts this. (He overturned a table, but never hit anyone or allowed others to use violence to defend him.)

I have no problem with CCW on college campuses (campi?), I was just saying that it seems contradictory for this university to allow students to carry guns if they're all christians.

You've apparently never really studied the Bible, I have, these people have, they are fine under the Christian faith, lets leave it at that.

Jesus is NO pacifist!!!!! read Revelation.... He's coming back and going to kick ASS!!!!
