What Curator said. Some collectors well scoff these Golden State rifles but they are all part of the LE history. Sounds like you have a No1 Enfield that's cut down to resemble a No5 rifle.

Here's a No1 to No5 conversion from a mud hut in the Khyber Pass region.

Now thats an interesting looking wee beasty & I'm picking it has an interesting history too. What does it shoot like?
Steve.

I have a No.4 Mk.1/2 that was put into a jungle carbine stock (I have to think os, as it is not only cut down but has that old recoil pad on it). It sounds like people did a lot of things with their Enfields.

I'll tell you what you got a great deal! An original Mk5 is getting hard to find,
and you wont get to hold one for $100.! The orig,s also had holes drilled in the action in a misguided attemp to make it lighter. all they did is make the action flimsey. Mine also had a narrow rubber strip on the butt plate, about an inch wide and four inches long, when you shot it, it felt like you got hit on the shoulder with the back of an axe!

Madcratebuilder is right, protective wings on rear sight and bolt head shape, spell No.1 MkIII to me.

Santa Fe's are fun and there are parts out there. They offered a short 5 round mag for legal hunting, but I guess used ones are getting pricey now? Full 10 rounders are available from Apex Supply in Colorado for around $25 :)

Yup, what you have is a Number 1 Mark III SMLE (Short Magazine Lee- Enfield) made at the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield Lock in 1914, then cut down and converted sometime in the late '50s or early '60s by Golden State Arms in Pasadena, California. It never had a Jungle Carbine-style flash hider in either configuration; Golden State soldered a standard hunting-rifle-style front sight to the shortened barrel. Does your gun have ventilation slots cut out on either side of the forend? Mine did. The GR stamp on your gun means George Rex -- King George V, the reigning monarch in England in 1914.
