Lil' Spit 'n Polish on a '51 Navy

Spent a little bit of time last night on my '51.

It was about time to show it a little bit of love. Been a good shooter (albeit a little high) and it deserved a little attention. I buffed up the brass and did a little re-finish of the stocks. I think it looks pretty good!

I tore it down to give it a good cleaning and man, was it filthy inside! Glad I took the time.

I'm trying a product called RPM (Rust Prevention Magic). The guy says that it prevents oxidation-- even on brass. So, I figured I'd give it a whirl and see if she dulls out after a while. We'll see. It doesn't leave a greasy film or anything that you can feel on the surface. Supposedly, it goes down into the pores of the metal.

Just thought I'd show her off a little bit while she was out and about. Hope y'all like her.

That looks like a "photo shoot" to advertise a line of pistols. Both the gun and the photography look very professional, right out of a fancy catalog. Geeze, now I'm ashamed to look at my crudded up old brasser. BUT(!) she's a good shooter!

Looks beautiful! I should do that with my 51's, and then put 'em in display boxes. I sure can't hit a damn thing with 'em. BP revolvers just ain't as fun for me as I'd hoped it would be, but I'm glad to hear others enjoy them and can actually hit something with them. I bet I'd have a hard time finding a bullet hole in a 4x8 sheet of plywood, and I'm not kidding. I can shoot my Walker OK, although it does hit high, at least it's consistent.

Glad you like it. I'm trying out that RPM stuff to see if it works like described. I like to keep my guns pretty clean and if they stay shiny, that's just a plus!

I like to shoot them too, so anything that helps me do both is just a good thing so far as I'm concerned.

I have two brass frame 1851's and they don't look like that
That is a great looking gun, I can't see any blemishes on the bluing either... you must take good care of it when using it.
Brass doesn't seem to like black powder, the nose cap of my rifle is totally black as is the area near the barrel pin holes on the frame of my revolvers.

Story behind the gun is that my brother in law and I got a set used at a LGS. He mentioned that he had always thought about getting one and I had been looking to get one for a little while. we picked them both up and headed straight out to the range and had a great time. My 10 year old son even got in on the action and loved it. They are both 44s, not 36s, but that doesn't bother us at all.

BIL is a good guy and it's nice having something like this to make a connection like that.

My ROA rivals modern revolvers I've owned. It is JUST amazing, not load picky, just a puire shooter. I love that thing, but it doesn't stop with the ROA. I like BP replicas just for the pure fun ot if.

My .44 Navy, with 21 grains equiv. pyrodex, cornmeal filler, shoots 5" at 25 yards with the 5" barrel, not great. My 5.5" Remmy shoots 3" at 25 with ball and 30 grains Pyrodex/cornmeal filler. That, and it shoots to POA. I bought a 7" barrel for the Navy and fitted a wedge I sourced somewhere to it with a file. I was going to use it for a snubby project, but it shoot 3" groups at 25 off the bench, so I haven't cut it down. I still may, though, since getting the Remmy. I'm still mullin' that over. I mean, the snubby would be pretty useless, but it'd be cool to play with point shooting at short range.

Rondog...you must also understand that the Colts I've owned shot very high at short range. The spiel is that they're sighted in for 75 yards, makes sense since they were primary weapons of the horse soldier back in the day. I've cut the notch way down in the hammer and hold the sight picture different to hit with the gun, otherwise, I'll shoot way high off paper. Try it out benched at short range and you'll see what I'm talking about. Also, you own it to yourself to try a Remmy before you give up on cap and ball.
