I started out with unique at 7.0 grains and get good results but am looking for something that I can load a little lighter. If I drop unique down much it gets kinda dirty (powder in face) so I thought I would try something a little faster. Loaded some bullseye down to 4.0 and 4.5. Worked good but the cases are a little sooty. Not too bad though. No particles blowing back in my face but the wind was kinda blowing. Shooting 185 jhp's. Any thing better out there to try?

7.0 Unique is not a good choice for a light target load.

Your 4.5 Bullseye load is good.
But 4.9 was once listed in the older Lyman manuals as most accurate with a cast 185 SWC.

I was happy with 3.6 grain of Bullseye with a commercial cast 180 grain LSWC.
I went to a self cast 200 grain SWC with 3.5 grains of Bullseye.
I played around with WW231, WST, but went back to Bullseye.

gshipps,
a few questions.
1. Are you sticking with 185 JHP's (brand??) or considering lead SWC (either 185 or 200)?
2. Short line (50' and 25 yds) or long line (50 yds)?
3. What crimp are you using (roll, taper)? And what amount of crimp(.468-.472)?

I've done a lot of Ransom testing with most of these variables and can make some recommendations with a bit more info.

FWIW

Generic or Montana gold. Don't know the first thing about loading lead.

All 25 yds or less.

Taper crimp .471.

Try 4.7-4.9 of Bullseye with a .470 crimp, as long as its not Remington brass (thinner and likes a .468 crimp). Jacketed bullets usually like to go faster to shoot better.

Jacketed bullets usually like .470 crimp, but Bullseye burns a bit cleaner with a harder crimp (more complete combustion).

FWIW

Roger that. I'll put a pinch more crimp in it. With 4.0 it shot like a dream and cycled fine.

I started off with 4.0gr of Bullseye and 200gr swc. They were pretty dirty and lead buildup was a problem. I went to 4.5gr of powder as per the Lyman manual and it seemed to clear up the problem especially the lead build up and they are still comfortable to shoot and my 1911 was a heck of a lot easier to clean last time out.

In my guns, the 4gr load is clean and I don't get any lead buidup. Neither do thousands of people.

4.0 N310 (very clean powder, meters very well) or 4.2 Titegroup under a 200 grain plated SWC.
All light loads seem to be a little sooty.

4.5 grains of Bullseye with a 200 grain swc is the best load I've ever used.

Good on ya 918V. I had a similar problem as the OP and upping the load by .5gr solved the problem. Sounds like our guns like their ammo worked up a little differently
