I recently purchased a 10" .222 Remington barrel for my Contender and I'm looking for load data. My old manuals only show rifle data with small rifle magnum primers. Are these still needed in a handgun?
Unfortunately all I see in the T/C section is 221 & 223 - seems they skipped the 222. Although, I have the 14" version and just assumed the rifle data would work fine...
Just looked at the Hornady #9 and it has .222 data for the T/C 10" barrel in the handgun section (.222 data starts on page 680 in the ebook version). Their published data is with Winchester WSR primers. The beginning writeup claims VIHT N-130 and IMR 4198 performed best in the "short" barrel across the range of Hornady bullets tested.
I picked up some 52gr BTHP bullets and found some IMR 4198 load data. But, no COL info for that powder. There was another powder listed for that same bullet but it listed a COL of 1.825". There's NO WAY that can be correct because it would put the mouth of the case about half way up the ogive. The brass alone is 1.7".
I loaded four cartridges with a COL of 2.075" (the mouth of the case at the start of the ogive) and they kerplunked ok...probably could have been longer.
