for shooting at the range. This would be 308 bolt action "sniper" rifle, well my range is only 200 yards. I don't hunt this would be just for shooting targets as accurately as I can get in my price range. My price is up to $1500 for the rifle only... the scope I will worry about later (looking at Nightforce or Leoupold tactical).

I made a short list and was wondering what you all thought of them and what other rifles you would recommend.

My short list

Savage 10fcp with the McMillan stock $1000 I shot this rifle the other day at my range there was a guy there with one and was kind enough to let me shoot a few rounds. I have to say I really liked it the trigger was pretty sweet too.

Tikka T3 Tactical $1300 I really like the look of this rifle and read a bunch of good reviews. I like how it has a pigtinny rail built right on the rilfe. The treaded barrel and optional muzzle break are nice thoughts too.

Remington 700 sps tactical $600 This rifle is the cheapest on my list not sure about this but have heard good things about remington. Is there a better/different model that is better?

any others? thanks

There is a guy on the Savageshooters web site with 2- 10FPs for sale, in B&C Duramaxx stocks with 0 MOA EGW picatinny scope rails, for $625 each. That would leave you a lot of money for glass. I've got two of those Duramaxxs, they're nice stocks. I wouldn't pay $300 more just to say I've got a McMillan.

there is a savage12f/tr it is a 308 goes for $1000 I think it would be hard to beat this super heavy 30" barrel. I have not read much about them but some guy sold one on gunbroker with a 5 shot group of 5" at 1000 yards on a target. Warning that was this persons claim not mine!

rich0372,

You overlooked arguably the best factory produced tactical rifle for under $1500: the FN SPR.

CRF action
chrome-lined match barrel (15,000 round life)
McMillan stock
20MOA picatinny rail

These rifles typically shoot match grade ammo at .50MOA to .75MOA. Mine, with handloads easily shoots sub-.50MOA groups at 100 yards.

Tikka tactical is the way to go, I have one and love it so much. Hand loads with sierra 168gr HPBT Matchking loads shoot .5 MOA at 200 yards. Just be aware, some people don't like the stock, they say it feels a little cheap and flimsy. This is true, it feels a little cheap, but you can't break/bend/hurt it if you tried. This gun is tough as nails and shoots amazing.

I purchased a savage 10FP in .308 not too long ago and love it...you may not even consider this in the same league as the Tikka, but it's only around $700 and has thus far worked out great for me. I do find that it tends to drop off rather quickly past 250-300yds...probably because it only has a 20" barrel, but if your range is only 200yds..you probably won't even notice it. I have been very impressed with it's accuracy so far. I've had 3 shot groups at 100yds of .20". Although on average they are around .40 to .50"...and this is with the relatively cheap winchester and federal 150gr SP ammo (using a Nikon Buckmaster scope and leupold base/rings). Also shot it at 300yds not too long ago, and had a 1.5" group. For $700 you could spend the extra money and get some really nice optics for it. The accutrigger is also a very nice feature. The 10FP model has a folding stock though, and you may not want this...I chose it because it's nice to be able to fit it into a small bag that will easily fit in my vehicle.

1) There's no such thing as a 'tactical' anything. The term is a marketing buzz word only.
2) Buy the Savage. It's the absolute best bang for your buck right out of the box. Then work up a load. Good ammo is essential.

I went with the Rem 700 LTR when I was looking for a tactical style .308

Here's mine and I love it....

I don't totally agree, I think tactical is used as a marketing buzz word the same way sniper is, but I do believe rifles can be tactical in design or at the very least tacticool:D

Pretty tall rings.........

They do look kinda tall don't they. Actually the scope I had on this gun originally required tall rings then when I upgraded the scope I was too cheap to buy new rings so I just left them on there and swapped out the scope. I really want to put a Redfield style base on it as well as new rings, maybe I'll pick one up at the gun show tomorrow.

I wouldn't pay $300 more just to say I've got a McMillan.

I wouldn't pay +$300 just to say I've got a McMillan also. I would, however, pay +$300 to have a McMillan.

200 yards max + shooting paper?

Forget the .308, go with .223. Will do everything you need at 200 yards. You're not giving up a thing. Less recoil, and a lot less expensive to shoot, which equates to more shooting.

I was in the same boat. Came to the conclusion that there's no sense in going .308 to kill paper unless you get out to medium to long range. Seriously, if 95% of the time you will be making holes in paper at 200, .223 does it just as well and even has a number of other advantages like mentioned above.

I already have an AR-15 that's why I want a .308

A friend of mine bought an SPS Tactical in 308 a while back and I got to shoot it out at the range. All I can say is that like all of the other SPS's I've seen and shot, that thing shoots. He had loaded some 168 gr. HP's if I recall, and I shot a 5 shot cluster into one whole that would probably measure .5", and he hasn't made any major upgradees to this gun. That's with the factory trigger, the factory hogue stock, and so on.

Replacing the H-S Precision stock with a McMillan A5 stock on my FN SPR, took my groups from .75MOA down to about .39MOA.

Really? What do you think was going on, a bedding issue? I always considered H-S to be a premium stock too.
