I suppose break-actions would be just as good,,,,,
Actually they are a poor choice for bench work,,,
It's very clumsy to break the action while sitting at a bench.
Bolt action is the best.
I just noticed something about the Savage Mk-IG single-shot,,,
According to budsgunshop.com, at $232.00, it's more expensive than the base Mk-II repeater at $174.07.
You can purchase a version of the Mk-IIF at Wal Mart for about $147.00,,,
But be aware that the Wal Mart rifle does not have the acu-trigger.
I own the Wal Mar rifle and do not miss the acu-trigger,,,
I also purchased a single-shot adaptor from those good folk in Australia,,,
I would bet that if you wrote and asked about a volume discount they could make it happen.
Or do like one person suggested and have them load only one round at a time in the regular magazine.
You really won't get much cheaper than the Savage Mk-II rifle no matter which version,,,
Unless you want to go back to the rifles with a cocking knob like the Crickett,,,
Even then you would lose a lot of quality in the rifle.
If I were starting your project I would opt for the Savage Mk-II from Wal Mart,,,
And have the kids load one round at a time in the regular magazine.
