I already have a 835 Ultra Mag which is great for ducks, but Im am thinking about buying a gun that is a little lighter just for hunting dove. Im on a budget due to college and Im leaning toward a new 870 Express. I found a couple used Wingmasters in my price range, but none with removable chokes. What is your opinion on the new Express? Does it really rust that bad, and is the plastic triger guard really that big of a deal?

The newer Expresses do not rust instantly. And many of us have killed many a dove with a fixed choke.

Used WMs are oft treasures. I'm no WM snob, but I'd get a fixed choke used WM and select a load based on the choke and conditions.

Have fun....

I personally have a problem with the plastic trigger guards myself. But I can overlook that feature. I'm looking for a used Wingmaster myself, and a used Model 12 and a used.....

Welcome to THR. Let us know what you get. We always like to see pictures.

I'd go for one these in a heartbeat!!

Why?
Metallurgy, attention to detail, craftsmanship , wood to metal fit, barrels that are better than barrels today ...

We don't need no stinkin' screw in chokes

hehehe...

Beware of the person with one gun, he knows how to shoot it.

A 20 Gauge Express with 26" barrel is a nice, light gun, BTW. Dove material, definitely.

My 12 Gauge with 28" barrel is sluggish for doves, IMO.

I just bought the Express for $219. I figured you can't beat that price.

Most of my wing shooting is done with a modified choke. Of course, I don't hunt quail or other flushing game. I used to hunt with an old Wingmaster full choked 20, was a little tight choked IMHO, but I didn't know any better at the time.

The last 20 years, my dove gun has been a Winchester 12 gauge M1400 Semi Auto. However, I bought a Remington Spartan side by side 20 I'm going to use this year to try and keep up with those little buggars a little better. It's light and quick. Nothing wrong with the 12, though. Have killed my share of limits with it. But, I'm kinda lookin' forward to the 20 after all these years using one 12 gauge or another.
