Loopholes? I need help!

OK....I am only 20 and don't turn 21 until January. I want my own gun more than anything, and I can't see shooting other people's guns for 9 more long months. :barf: So is there way that I can get a gun legally? :confused: My dad is a retired cop, and he seems to think I should just wait until I turn 21. I just want one that I can call my own. Any thoughts on this? I appreciate it, and thanks in advance for any suggestions...
 
In FL, if you're 18, you can buy a long gun from a dealer or a private party. You can also buy a handgun from a private party, but not from a dealer.
 
You can buy a rifle or shotgun now, legally. If your parents approve (if you live with them, you'd better get their approval), get a .22LR rifle. Practice, plink, and have fun with it. Start saving for a handgun when you turn 21.
 
Unless local law prevents it (which florida state law does not) it is 100% legal for you to own a handgun and transport it to and from the range. The tricky part is getting one since it is illegal for an ffl to transfer one to you. Why is it like this? How should I know it makes zero sense lol.

What you need to do is find a private party and buy it from them, so long as it is an instate private transfer it is legal to do so. Also someone can legaly gift a gun to you and by the letter of the law if someone bought a gun from an ffl and then gave it to you it is legal, however atf doesn't always stick to the letter and makes it up as they go so you might want to try going a private deal from start to finish. Try floridashootersnetwork, they have a nice buy sale and trade forum in there and it is all florida so it is instate.

Also remember, it is perfectly legal for you to buy a long gun from a dealer at 20

Yes. In Florida you can even have a handgun in your glove compartment even if you don't have a CCP.
 
Get a rifle now and a pistol in 9 months. There are a lot of good things you can learn by owning a good rifle. Muzzle control, trigger discipline, and safe handling are all very similar from long guns to handguns.
 
You could look for loopholes, while "trying to avoid the law" (even if it is ridiculous) or you could by a rifle, which would serve you better in almost all scenarios, and then get a pistol when you are of legal age. Advice from a fellow young man.

Why is complying with the law "looking for a loophole"? This is like the antis' approach. Back when the .gov enacted the assault weapons ban, AR-15s couldn't have flash hiders or bayonet lugs. That was the law. So the manufacturers built ARs without flash hiders or bayonet lugs ... and the antis howled that they were "taking advantage of a loophole."

BS. If that's taking advantage of a loophole, then I guess driving at 65 MPH in a 65 MPH zone so you don't get a speeding ticket must be "taking advantage of a loophole," too.

At 20, you cannot buy a handgun from an FFL but a handgun can be given to you, and in some states you can buy one directly from a private party. You can own it once you acquire it legally. That's not a "loophole" ... that's the law. Once you own it, you are subject to the same laws as anyone else regarding transporting it within your state.
