I'm looking for an IWB holster for my S&W 337PD, but I can't seem to find one that rides low enough for me.

I've tried an Uncle Mike's size 36 and a Don Hume leather one, and both of them make the gun ride so high it feels like the butt is halfway up my rib cage.

I'm looking for one that lets the bulk of the gun ride below the belt line. I know the clipdraw is an option, but having the revolver rub up against my delicate skin might get uncomfortable after a while. ;)

Anybody have any recommendations for a low-riding leather or synthetic holster? Thanks!

Curley,

If you want something custom, we are happy to do that for you at prices that might surprise you for custom leather work. Check out our regular stuff at www.kdholsters.com. We are introducing an IWB model similar to the Milt Sparks summer special soon and it will be a regular order item.

If you are looking for an off-the-shelf type solution -- try the Desantis Insider. The J-frame model carries the gun almost entirely below the belt line.

Try Andrews Leather, the McDaniels II model. If you adjust it for a usual tilt angle it puts the gun fairly low. It can also be used without any tilt, or just a little. Very adjustable. I put my money where my keyboard is and use one of these.

I think the site is andrewsleather.com

I have one of those Uncle Mike's super-floppy cloth IWB's with the plastic clip. I cut all the material off above the clip and carry my Taurus .38 in it. Super comfy and super-low ride. Doesn't get much cheaper either.

Ten or more years ago Uncle Mikes made a deep riding, metal belt clipped holster just as you are describing. For several years I carried a J frame in one in the appendix position. It disappeared under an untucked shirt and was comfortable, even sitting. Then they improved it by going to a lower riding clip (that carried the gun higher) that was made of plastic and added bulk to the holster. Of course they ruined it.

Since then I have also tried an Alessi Talon and the worst thing about it is that big damn plastic clip. I'm sure that clip is "better" but it adds bulk to a minimalist holster.

It should be a simple matter if one had a supply of the old Uncle Mikes metal belt clips to have any leather maker sew it to a THIN pocket of leather for appendix carry.

An advantage of the Alessi Talon clip is that it can be attached to the waistband, under the belt, which both conceals the clip and allows for some flexibility when sitting.

I carry my Kahr E-9 in an Alessi APX, a model designed only for J-frame revolvers and regular-size Kahrs. It's canted slightly to the rear, eliminating any rubbing against my spare tire as well as the jabbing against my groin that I get with other IWB holsters in the strong side appendix position. It works cross-draw, too, but is less concealable in that position.

You can deal with Lou Alessi directly by e-mailing him at [email protected].

I also tried the Don Hume IWB for my 337PD. It's a really nice holster: covers the hammer, nice pull-the-dot snaps on the belt loops, but it does ride high. I'd love the same holster that sits about 1 1/2 inch lower.

Thanks for all the input.

I've ordered a DeSantis Insider, which should be here next week. It looks like what I want -- thin leather with the belt clip positioned high for greater concealability.
