When you lube the 51 what all are you applying the lube to ? I have been useing just a little lube on the arbor(Cylinder pin) a wipe of lube in the cylinder pin hole, a little around the flange on the frame where the back of the cylinder would ride. No wads but I lube over the balls.
This gun is tuned to perfection and runs as smooth as a baby's butt until I shoot six, then the hammer becomes hard to pull back and just kind of stiff action all the way around. It doesn't do it all the time but most of the time I have to clean it well before I shoot my second cylinder. As soon as I clean it it's as smooth as can be again.
One time it was so bad the hammer would not come back all the way. I checked the gap between the breach and cylinder and that's not a problem.
Any ideas? Mike

I was having a similar problem with mine too. I loosened the hammer screw up just a hair and problem cured. I think the screw is bent a little, but I never bothered to replace it yet.

Thanks CB, I'll try that next. Over the years I have tuned a lot of guns both C&B and modern, this one has me stumped but I'll "get her done" one way or another;) Mike

Mike,

Don't use just a "little" lube on the arbor, slather that good. Colt designed those grooves in to be well greased, keeps the powder residue from blowing back into the arbor hole and siezing the cylinder.

Remington gets around that by making almost no clearance for powder gases to blow back in to the cylinder pin hole, 3 or 4 cyls or more before you need to flush the fouling out.

I think it took 5 cyls full with the Rem the other day before I had to pull the cyl to clean the pin and regrease. No liquid with me so had to wipe and butter.

Colt was still turning free for a couple more cyls.

Cheers,

George

BTW, that was with real BP, Goex, 777 and APP didn't slow them up at all.

Thanks George, Got it handled. No problem with my Remingtons, I can shoot them for about 8 cylinders before I really have to clean them.Took a few tricks to tume em that way but it sure is nice. Mike
