Which is better?
Thoughts?
Looking to shoot some cheap ammo and something the wife will like to shoot. I alreayd have a couple ARs but no Sigs.

Of those two I'd get the M&P15-22. However after handling the S&W and the Colt, I got the Colt/Walther/Umarex M4 .22LR and love it.

I am going just the opposite as Quentin, I like the SIG 522. Works great with Blackdog mags.

Now the scale is balanced again............

I love my M&P 15-22. Feeds everything so far. I mainly shoot bulk Win 555 and Federal from Wal-mart. Zero problems. Spare mags run $20, I've got 3. Everything seems to be real well made. I like how the trigger group assembly is mil-spec, ditto for the grip (mine sports an olive drab grip and rail covers).

Since I mainly shoot up to 50 yards with it, I put a Primary Arms red dot sight on it. Can hit the spinner targets all day.

I'll tip the scale

I'll take the M&P or the Colt max over the SIG. The colt and smith are great trainers for first time AR users. I have 3 M&P's I use just for that and they are flawless, easy to clean and repair if ever needed, which is never.

I've heard some poor reliablity and quality stories about the Colt .22s...can anyone confirm this?

The M&P-22 looks like a sweet little gun. However, what I really like about the 522 is how close it is in looks to the "real thing". The new HK416 .22 is the same.

Yes. These Colt stamped (not really Colt) guns are junk. I have seen a number of them broken and with function problems.

I bought a 15-22 MOE. I wanted the flip up sights and the receiver mounted sling swivel. I've put about 4k rounds through mine, 500-1k per range trip. I can run about 500 rounds of bulk pack through it before it starts to ask for a little cleaning. CCI minimags or their bulk pack tactical ammo get me 750-1000 rounds before things really seem gummed up and failures pop up. Accuracy is good enough. I haven't bench tested this rifle but the shooting I do at the targets I use, the accuracy is good enough that if there is a miss, it was me. The mags are plentiful and inexpensive. They work well and haven't shown issues yet. I'm very pleased with my purchase. I have no first hand experience with the Sig, so I can't rate the two to each other. That said, if I had to buy over, I would go with the S&W again. It is the most fun rifle I own.

No problem with my Colt M4 .22. Nice rifle as are the others I've seen at the range. I'm glad I bought one but would have been satisfied with the S&W as well. Almost all the problems with either gun, and you do hear of them, boils down to ammo selection and in the Colt, the bolt speed adjustment. Start using Federal value pack 36 grain and set the speed to hi-velocity and you're set. Use Remington Golden Bullet in either the Colt or S&W and you'll not be happy.

I can get a SIG 552 for $375. Or a S&W 15-22 with the MagPull accessories for $475. I konw accessories are worth $100 more but is the gun worth it if I'm putting a laser on it anyway?

I have a 15-22 and my only problem is I cannot put it down. Also if you get one a little work on the trigger is the only thing you need.
