A question for those in the know. I have looked at the mp-pistol.com forums. Things are looking up in this latest generation of M&Ps. The forum shows many LE agencies going to them. Does Smith finally have the kinks worked out?

Per the gunsmiths at Gunsite, yes. They had favorable things to say about them and a couple of their staff members were even carrying them.

My son has been shooting an M&P in Production class uspsa every week and hasn't had a single malfunction of any kind. Must have shot 3k rounds by now. Its a great gun and a pleasure to shoot. We had a sick trigger job done on it and it is really amazing. Even before the trigger job there were no kinks to be worked out.

I was hoping to buy an M&P 45, when they came available in Massachusetts. But I am holding off on buying a M&P at this time, it seems there are still some minor issues with the design. I would not be surprised if they made some major design changes in the next few years to correct some issues. Most new gun designs go through at least some minor revisions in the first few years to correct any original design flaws.

rbernie... no resentment need be felt.... no need not to feel free, as you have, to chime in with your experience... no one has discounted you! Certainly many people report positive experiences with their M&P's, but there do remain some persistent problems with the platform (most notably the weak mag catch design) that a number of users are experiencing. This is not unexpected with a brand new gun design and as others have indicated, in time, S&W will likely make improvements to the design.

Out of the first two M&Ps I bought, I have had 50/50 luck.

My full size 9 has seen many many problem free rounds.

My compact nine didn't see much action at all before developing a bind in the mag release. It left today, going back to the mothership.

I have just purchased an M&P40 (used). I haven't fired it yet, so I'll withhold comment regarding it.

My MP40 has been trouble-free in 400 rounds. It is a medium-late serial number (S/N MPHXXXX). I would avoid the very early MPAXXXX serial numbers as they are the ones that usually had the early problems you might hear about. You can find out a lot about these guns on www.mp-pistol.com.

My 40 Compact is a recent build, Serial number MP-N.... and ran just fine for the first 400 rounds or so - I was really thrilled with it (and wrote extensively of it's merits on forums) up until that point... then all the troubles began. I won't belabor it here, but the gun is going back to S&W for the third time this week... I'm expecting a new frame or pistol or refund this time. With any M&P I would look to get through at least 1000 rounds without any mag drop issues before trusting for carry... and then regularly inspect the metal engagement surface of the mag catch for wear - closely - with every cleaning.

Good advice.

I thought I had dodged the bullet with my compact. I had a couple hundred rounds through it with no problem. Then one day I go to put it in my holster and the magazine falls on the floor. I try inserting it again, only to notice the mag release is locked in. Turns out, it was binding badly and the spring was not strong enough to push it back out. So the magazine wasn't locking into place.

So...the M&Pc goes off to Smith. The Glock 26 goes back on my hip.

I have close to that through my nine and have had no issues - in fact it has run flawlessly - but will keep an eye peeled.

With tydephan's and perhaps a few other M&Ps in Smith's hands I suspect a stronger mag release spring in the future. After playing with the mag release spring in my Compact, it seems pretty weak. I'm no engineer, but I suspect this will fix many of the problems.

I'm not sure what will become of my Compact. With my Colt Commander and Smith & Wesson 642 I can conceal carry with any type of clothing. The purpose of the Compact was to fill the space between the Commander and J-frame Smith.

I might replace it with another 1911. Then again, I might just keep it now that I have so much invested (ammunition is not cheap). My Compact is working like a champ now and it's a great gun.

I think most of the problems have been with the Compact models. I still prefer my Glock 27 to the Compact MP's because of the problems. Have you had any problems with the Fullsize models? What serial number range?

If you're interested in getting one just to shoot, comp, etc, get the full-sized. The bugs are worked out. My Full-sized 40 has 1600 rounds with no problems other than the reloads I make. For some reason, it is finicky with flat point plated and Semi-wadcutter lead load that are longer than 1.125. I have had Zero issues with factory, of which I have about 600 through it. I fired an H&K USP at the range the other day and have to say I like my M&P better.

Could be. I don't think I've heard of a single mag-drop problem with a full-size. That is probably the reason Smith is having a fun time figuring it out. I think all of the newer compacts come with a lower profile mag-release button, which is supposed to help, and they are looking into harder steel for the actual retainer. I am by no means the authority on this. I just know that the FS are 99% problem free at this time. The compacts have about another 6 months in all likelyhood.
