Anyone shooting a SW MP in 45 caliber? Likes ,dislikes. Been kinda looking at one. Thanks

Smith & Wesson M&P .45acp .....

I owned a M&P .45acp Compact in 2013. I used it for home & vehicle defense mostly. I CCed & open carry a few times too.
I gave it to a friend after some business contracts in Nov 2013.
I looked into buying a new M&P 4.5" barrel .45acp in FDE from Bud's Police Supply but I got a better offer on a local LE trade in Glock 21 generation 04 pistol with 3 dot Glock night sights(green) and 3 13rd factory mags. :D
I like the M&Ps. A few recent versions need a little TLC(Apex Polymer trigger system) but my .45acp shot fine. I used JHPs & FMJs with no problems.
The M&P overall is good. A big - is the lack of 14rd pistol magazines all over.
The 10rd mags & 8rd compacts are okay but I like extended magazines for defense-duty.
The Smith & Wesson FDE color is impressive. I like the ambi safety designs also.

Overall, you can't go wrong with a new M&P but the HK45s, PX4s, XDms, SIGs in .45acp are worth a look.

The M&P 45 F 4" is my nightstand gun. It's well balanced, accurate and the grip is just right. Certainly one of the best 45acp striker-fired pistols on the market.

I highly recommend it.

I had an M&P45 last year for a while. It was a full-size gun, 4.5" barrel and thumb safety. I bought it after shooting a 9mm full-size and being impressed with the low felt recoil; I thought that the 45 version would be awesome.

For me I was disappointed. It was pretty accurate but I had to concentrate really hard on the trigger pull; from what I've read/heard the Apex trigger would fix that. I thought the thumb safety was too easy to move but figured that could be addressed also. What killed it for me was a combination of feeling the grip was too large (which I cannot explain! I had the smallest backstrap on it and I have big hands, I don't get it) and the recoil was snappy to the point of being almost uncomfortable. I really wasn't expecting that! I may try another again in the future but that was my experience.

I remain impressed with the 9mm version, though I haven't owned one or shot one extensively.

Your experience truly is strange. For instance, the trigger on the .45 has usually been better than on the 9mm. As far as the grip goes, I have medium-large hands and the medium grip fits me to a tee and I don't have long fingers.

Another mystery!

I personally think the M & P 45 is an excellent firearm. I've owned two. I ended discovering I was a Glock guy. The high points of the M & P are excellent ergonomics, it fits more shooters than a G3 Glock 21 and it's a soft shooter. My biggest issues were fixable, cheap OEM sights (yep the Glock has them too), gritty trigger which I shot fine but could never get with, and poorly finished mags.

I ended up going with the Glock 21 G4 for a few reasons, better stock trigger, better mags with more capacity, and in my view it's a better finished gun. I also wanted to use the same platform for EDC and the Glock 30SF or 30s are both better concealed firearms. Having said all that, the M & P is a good gun, and if you get one you won't regret it, with a little work from a guy like Doug at ATE or Apex it can be a great gun.

Water-Man - I have no explanation for it. A friend who has similar tastes in pistols shot it also, and formed the same opinions. I do find that despite having large hands I prefer slim pistols - 1911 is my favorite, but I put slim grip panels on my BHP and my Sig P6. On the other hand I've had no trouble handling guns with a historically large grip, like a Beretta 92 or full-size Glock.

Anyway, not to pull this too off topic... I handled a 9mm M&P recently and maybe I just need to try a 45ACP again, who knows?

Smith & Wesson M&P line.....

I've read in the past that Smith & Wesson based the M&P pistol concept/series on the .40S&W caliber.
The 9x19mm, .357sig & .45acp were off shoots of the M&P .40 pistol.
I can see buying a new "no thumb safety" Shield in 9mm before Id get a new M&P .45acp model.
