Got a call from my LGS where I was on a waiting list for an M&P 9mm Shield. After almost nine months they got a few in. A few hours later I was headed for the range to try it out after a quick degrease and lube.
Trigger: Hardly target quality but fine for a SD pistol. (I'm spoiled by my good revolver triggers.)
Size: This is easily the smallest, lightest handgun I own but not so small that it is hard to handle like some 25 autos or a Ruger Bearcat.
Recoil/Control: I shot regular American Eagle 115 gr 9mm. I don't know how S&W did it but the recoil is no more, maybe less, than a CZ 75b. Very easy to control and position your hand properly.
Sights: The 3 dot sights work great and are easy to pick up even with my progressive trifocals.
Reliability: I put 100 rounds through it this first session, some rapid fire. No problems at all. Next session, I'll try different ammo and some cast bullet hand loads.
Accuracy: At 15 yards it was easy to keep two inch groups or smaller if I did my part. What impressed me was firing 30 rounds just as fast as I could pull the trigger and reload. Most of them fell in a 3 to 4 inch group with a lot of touching. For SD purposes I thought that was darn good. The natural pointing of the Shield in my hand and the controlled recoil was very effective.
Next session I'll try it at 25 yards.
The reviews of the Shield have been very positive and I can see why. It will be fun, and instructive, as I keep puting it through its paces and learn its limits.
Bonus: My wife is small and is a bit recoil sensitive (occaisional arthritis). She also found the 9mm Shield comfortable and controlable.
I hope others have had the same positive experience with it. I'm really impressed.
