Got a call from my LGS where I was on a waiting list for an M&P 9mm Shield. After almost nine months they got a few in. A few hours later I was headed for the range to try it out after a quick degrease and lube.

Trigger: Hardly target quality but fine for a SD pistol. (I'm spoiled by my good revolver triggers.)

Size: This is easily the smallest, lightest handgun I own but not so small that it is hard to handle like some 25 autos or a Ruger Bearcat.

Recoil/Control: I shot regular American Eagle 115 gr 9mm. I don't know how S&W did it but the recoil is no more, maybe less, than a CZ 75b. Very easy to control and position your hand properly.

Sights: The 3 dot sights work great and are easy to pick up even with my progressive trifocals.

Reliability: I put 100 rounds through it this first session, some rapid fire. No problems at all. Next session, I'll try different ammo and some cast bullet hand loads.

Accuracy: At 15 yards it was easy to keep two inch groups or smaller if I did my part. What impressed me was firing 30 rounds just as fast as I could pull the trigger and reload. Most of them fell in a 3 to 4 inch group with a lot of touching. For SD purposes I thought that was darn good. The natural pointing of the Shield in my hand and the controlled recoil was very effective.
Next session I'll try it at 25 yards.

The reviews of the Shield have been very positive and I can see why. It will be fun, and instructive, as I keep puting it through its paces and learn its limits.

Bonus: My wife is small and is a bit recoil sensitive (occaisional arthritis). She also found the 9mm Shield comfortable and controlable.

I hope others have had the same positive experience with it. I'm really impressed.

One of the best SD pistols on the market. Here's one with a set of Ameriglo night sights, Apex sear, and Talon grips.

Thanks for the review, BullRunBear. I shot one at a local rental range, and I was quite impressed. It was almost as easy to shoot as my full-sized M&P. Now if I could just find one...

I was finally able to get my grubby paws on a 9mm. My local (45 minutes away) GS posted on Facebook on Thursday that they had 50, got there fairly early on Saturday and picked one up. Hopefully going to the range with it next weekend if the ammo I ordered from Cabela's today comes in.

I would like to see a full-size Shield (or a narrower M&P) for my wife. She has fired an M&P and liked it, but it was a little too wide for her short fingers.

I agree about the comment about being more lefty friendly. I am lefty and I own a shield. It is a nice shooting gun, but I carry my pps more often. Its more lefty friendly. I can't wait for the xds 9mm

I inquired about the Sheild about 8 months ago at the LGS. I think they said I was #20 on there list. I pretty much forgot about it. They called me last week and said my gun was in. Now between the time I was put on the list and now I had the oportunity to shoot a shield. It seemed like a good gun but it's not anything I would trade my Kahr PM9 in for, nor would it fill a need for me, so I told them to give it to the next gun on the list. The shield is about the same size in lengh and height as my Glock 26 but about a 1/4 ' narrower, but bigger than my PM9.

Congrats BRB. I agree with pretty much all of your review. Recoil is quite manageable for a pistol that small.

I wasn't about to pay the prices they are going for right now but knew if my favorite toy store got them in they wouldn't be priced any higher than MSRP. So I waited. One Friday afternoon, while at my computer, I received an email. It was the newsletter from that store. Shields in stock! I immediately called them and they held one for me so I could make the 40 mile drive there. I am not one bit disappointed. Excellent trigger for it's type, great ergos and flawless so far with factory FMJ and my reloads (FMJ and LRN). My carry has been a revolver for over 30 years. I've tried several different compact semi autos thinking they would pick up at least a part time job as my carry. All failed for one reason or another. The Shield is definitely up to the task.

I paid $399 for mine which, as it turns out, might end up being cheaper than the 400 rounds of ammo I'm trying to aquire for it's first range trip :banghead:

I have really enjoyed my Shield in 9mm so far. My LGS has been getting in a steady supply of Shields in 9mm but not any 40's. They sell out within a few hours. Been a little adjustment getting used to the trigger and narrow grip but I'm coming around.
