Has anyone ran across an M1 Carbine at Big 5 sporting goods stores yet. Have one on the rack at the local Yuma Az store. Was in a rush and did't have a chance to ask to see it for $999 all i would do is look. Where are they coming from and who's the distributor?

CMP has been known to trade off ammo for item they need for staying in business or completing a package offer. Maybe they traded off some carbines for stocks or barrels.

"...for $999 all I would do is look..." For that kind of money, looking and trying not to laugh is all you should do.

Same at a store here in W Texas, a little bit of a steep price for the rifle. They say it might go on sale one of these days for $699. Not even sure if that is a good price?

For some carbines that would be a steal, but from what I've read about the Big 5 carbines that is about twice what they are worth. Supposedly they are Israeli surplus.

Although far from you, there are two more (Kahr) carbines at a local store priced at $700, for the same price as my gun. Mine has been with the gunsmith. Using standard ammo, it is unreliable. One out of each 3-6 rounds will not quite feed up into the chamber. This gun was brand-new about 3 months ago, and have fired about 400+ rounds through it and kept it clean and oiled.
You might consider the stored original Winchester M-1 carbines from the CMP which just sold their guns early this month. Someone might consider selling you one. They will be (if not already) imported from storage in Italy.

Also, I've grown impatient with the gunsmith who has kept the first gun I've ever bought over 5 weeks with no communication-none at all. I'll go pick it up this week (apparently not looked at yet) and never use him again, and will mail it right back to the factory after shooting and cleaning it. To be objective here, I have very little gun experience (no semi-auto.) until this fall and have only had the single-shot .22.

The ammo in 'that' store just went up from $20 per fifty to $24 about two weeks ago. Staff there told me that the price might go up each time they order more (copper-jacket from Remington).
At Bass Pro Shop, about $21/box.

Rack-grade Inland and Underwood available from CMP now. Winchester sold out, others coming this summer.

The rack grade may not be much, but I would rather pay CMP for USGI than $700+ for commercial.

Also, the "Israeli" carbines recently would likely be Israel Arms (IAI). Pretty sure these are new commercial copies, not surplus.

There is an Underwood M1 Carbine at my local store. Wood is typical surplus and mechanical is solid, but bore is bright but rifling is pretty worn out. Is weak rifling typical? Don't know what year. Does it worth $500? Thanks.

Not bad on the Underwood. If sound mechanically that's a good price.

The rack grades at CMP function but looks wise especially stocks are hit and miss, but you can get replacement stock pretty easy.

If you really want to pick the apple off the tree, if your close to the Anniston Alabama store or their North store in Port Clinton OH make the drive with all your paperwork ready and get it off the shelf. I went to the South store last March, pure heaven, 1903's, Kimber .22's and Garands on the shelfs at that time. Still kicking myself for not buying a 1903 at the time.

bought winchester at SOG for $595. rough wood, no pitting on metal. not original stock, but winchester reciever and barrel..maybe more winchester parts but haven't looked. is remarked by the US distributor. don't know orgin (after New Haven).

Mine has one for $999, I remember looking at it and then the man behind the counter proceeded to tell me that it was a great price. I had to keep from laughing until I left the store.

999 is too high for most makers. Only super nice examples for the common makers would be that high. (IE Inland, NPM, Winchester, Quality, Standard, Saginaw)

Here in Ohio, most CMP examples are going for about 650-750. That's fair.

I'd only pay 999 and up for a Rock Ola or an Irwin-Pederson. Maybe an 'UN-quality' (made by Union Switch & Signal) but those are quite rare.

here in port angolis washington there is a shop that has 2, one is an isralie arms for 530 or so and the other is a 50 year aneversery gun or somthing like that, that one is going for about 550 or so but it has an a2 stock.

Poolie01, now you got me thinking about a drive up there.....

I was about to start a thread about the whopping high price at my local Big 5, but it is already going. I just went in and noticed that $999 carbine tonight and could not believe that price.

It is an Inland, good finish and maybe not used since the refurb. The stock is numbered to the gun and isn't as nice. I didn't bother to check the bore, what's the point?

It is for sure some surplus from somewhere as it has some Euro-style numbers painted on the stock. Their "ones" are not like Yankee "ones". So it could be from Israel.

These are imports through Century Arms, and they came from all over the world, mostly South and Central America, and by-and-large they're beat to hell and back.
