ok my buddys grandfather gave him an m1 garand made by springfield armory(the new one) the gun wont load the first round like it should after putting the clip in you have to chamber the first round by pushing the bolt forward by hand

he sent me a text today saying "i found out whats wrong with my garand, the operating rod gets stuck in the disassembly notch" do you think this could be the cause?

if so how would we fix it

im good with guns in general but ive only shot garands and cleaned them nover worked on one or really looked at its guts to see how it works

I also have a Springfield Armory Inc. Garand reproduction.

The op rod may be positioned at the disassembly notch, but this probably isn't the cause. The problem, as mentioned in the previous post, is typical to Garands on the first round. So typical that it generally isn't considered a problem.

The best answer is that the fully loaded enbloc requires more friction to strip the top round than the remaining 7. A gentle "shove" on the oprod handle is usually sufficient to get the process started, and then the round chambers normally on oprod spring force. This starting force can vary from clip to clip, perhaps depending on how sharp the edges are. Well-used ones tend to load more smoothly, IMO.

Unless your disassembly notch has square edges, it shouldn't be stopping the oprod motion. My receiver has well-sloped edges for the disassembly notch.

Absolutely, 100%, completely NORMAL for 90% of all M1 rifles.....

I own numerous M1's. Maybe 10% will close on the first round without a bump. These are typically the ones that are the oldest (read: well worn in.) and that have the smoothest finish on all the moving parts.

Garands forever

Both of my Garands (1 Springfield and 1 an HRA) do exact the same.

Mine are the same but, do the tilt test to make sure the op rod can float back and forth with no dragging. Also check the hand guard clearance and put a light coating of lube on the underside of the barrel.

Check out the CMP Garand forum, it's just like this forum only it's dedicated to Garands.

If the rod is getting stuck in the disassembly notch and the rod is not bent or otherwise defective, it sounds like your friend may be inadvertently lifting the rod when loading.

The proper way to load for a right hander is to have the edge of the right hand against the operating rod and load the clip with the right thumb. When the clip clicks in place use the heal of the right hand to slap the rod forward.

Left handers, like me, do it differently.

10X, yeah us lefties have a problem with loading that clip, it's a PITA but I'll never get rid of my Garands because of it.

ok thanks guys
neither of us has alot of m1 experience i have the most and ive shot 2 and broken them down for cleaning thats it

the 2 i fired both slammed shut and i ended up with a garand thumb from the first one so we both expected it

When in doubt, whip it out.

Department of the Army Feild Manual FM 23-5
U.S. Rifle Caliber .30, M1
May 1965
Chapter 3 (Operation and Functioning)
Para 12 (Loading the rifle)
Sub para b (Full Clip)
last sentence in para

"It may be necessary to strike forward on the operating rod handle with the heel of the right hand to fully close and lock the bolt"

This is why CMP includes a copy of FM23-5 with their rifles and encourages folks to read it cover to cover before mesing with the rifle.
