Absolutly no problem with nicks or dents to the crown as long as they dont protrude into the inside of the muzzle

So how exactly do you determine if your Garand is a Greek return (or a Dane, or something else)?

Things like the color of the parkerizing (Greeks were almost black) And the Danes had lighter almost grey parkerizing, and many of them were re-barreled with VAL barrels. Highly sought after.

Orlando will be along in a moment. He knows a lot more on this subject than I do.

Just a couple years back, as I recall, an older gent received a Garand from the CMP.

He was a Korean War veteran.

Under the buttplate of his "new" Garand was the slip of paper that HE had placed there while standing on the banks of the Yalu River, which separates Korea from Red China!

That's one rifle about which we do know at least a partial service history.

Imagine the odds against THAT rifle returning to the hands that carried it in Korea....astronomical, to say the least.

Some of the returned Danew had VAR barrels not VAL, also some seemed to have BMB OR BP Italian marked parts. Danish returns often had Beech replacement stocks/handguards. The wood is fairly easy to identify as ithas geain that looks like small fingernails or fishscales. Inside the stock in the barrle channel would also have a sticker that had sighting info
There is alot of confusion on so called Greek Black. "Some" of the refinished Greek rifles have a smooth balck paint like finish. Now people get confused and when they see a black parkerizing they call if Greek Black. Not so as later rifles were US Arsenal finished in Black Manganese parkerizing
There is no real way to know where your rifle has been for sure but you can get a idea by looking for those clues.
Years ago CMP did sell what they called a USGI Grade, these rifles were never loaned to other countires.
