I have still not been able to get my op rod out, even after watching all of the videos and getting advice from this board.

So, I have another idea I would like to float before I try it out.

I'm thinking of moving the op handle full forward and taking a heat gun (at 800 degrees) and warming the notch a bit. I'm hoping the thermal expansion will allow me to work the handle out. My heat gun will go to 1500 degrees, but I'm thinking I should try it at the lowest temp.

What do folks think about that? I don't think 800 degrees will degrade the metal, and it might make a big difference.

You just have to kind of feel when the tab is centered in the notch on the receiver. After you've done it a few times, you'll recognize it, and it will be easier. When it's centered, lift up on the charging handle just a hair, and jiggle it a little while rotating the handle downward, an the tab should pop out.

My M1 op rod is sometimes a pain to get out. Just takes some jiggling to get it just right and then when you think you have tried every way you could move it to get it out it pops out on its own like its laughing at me. Point is, it comes out like its supposed to.

A heat gun will have no measurable effct on the op rod.

The only thing it will accomplish is burn your hand while fiddling with the op rod.

Is your M1A Springfield?

If so, there is a special trick to getting the OR out. You need to pick up a great little book : http://fulton-armory.com/them14ownersguide.aspx

not that you have to get it from FA - I just knew where to find the reference (I got mine there). In the back there is a short mention of a slight difference with the SA build. the OP needs to be pried, every so gently when the notch is lined up. I can't remember exactly how to do it sitting here, but I could look it up later tonight and post the exact instructions.

Hope this helps
