Would it be possible to install a longer ,say 24" barel on my loaded M1A? Just wondering... My current one is getting pretty worn out so I will heve to replace it anyway. Any suggestions?

Thanks
KZ

PS: just over 2000 rounds went throught it that I know of since the gun was bought used.

I've never seen a 24" before. You might could have a custom one built by Barnett or someone. I honestly don't know how much the extra 2" would change things.

Place the front sight six inches farther out on the barrel is one advantage.
Reduction of blast and flash and elimination of the flash suppressor is another.
Slight increase in velocity and increased bullet stability at longer ranges.

Functioning would not be affected with the gas system located in the same spot.

Adding two inches in length seems to work best when used in conjunction with a heavier barrel profile so a noticable increase in weight is a drawback unless you are shooting offhand and not lugging the rifle around as a field rifle.

Wait,I see where he's going with this.If you add two inches of barrel, and move the front sight to the end of the barrel, you really would increase the sight radius by a lot.I don't know if it would be six inches, but it would be a lot. That said, you would be horribly mutilating one of the finest rifles in the world, for little or no gain.It would be like making your Ferrari more fuel efficient by adding sails.

I don't know why people get so up-in-arms about a modification (in this case, a pretty minor one) to a battle rifle, regardless of its historical significance or prestige. The rifle can always be rebarrelled to its original stock configuration. It's not like taking the Mona Lisa and slashing it with a chainsaw. Besides, a Ferrari with sails would be pretty badass. As long as you could take the sails off if you wanted to.

killzone,

In a pure "possibility" sense, I'd have to say, "yes, it can be done".

The caveats here are that it would take a 'smith who is VERY familiar with the M14 types and who turns his own barrels from blanks. He would also have to be able to lengthen the op-rod tube to compenesate for the longer barrel... $$$$.

The question I have to ask is, "What do you hope to gain with an extra 2" over the standard 22" M14 tube???

Just curious.

Best regards,

+1

All of the M14s that I have set up to shoot have been modified.
Two of them now have historical significance because of the modifications.
All of them have a prestige factor due to the company that built them for me.

None of the "battle rifles" that we own are authentic USGI rifles
so I say it's your rifle and your money - do whatever you want.

As for the barrel length, a 20.0" barrel is the optimum barrel length for the M14.
18.0" and 22.0" barrels work just fine, but the best overall length is 20 inches.

This is good!

All spoken well so far. Thanks a lot...

Why not do it? I 've been saving up for a Night Force scope but whatever..

I'll post pictures as soon as it is done ... this will be awsome..
