This question isn't centered around pressures, but instead performance consistency, velocity as it were.

I either load 110 or 125 gr. jacketed and max Longshot charges. What I'm wondering, and because someone I know told me that magnum primers with L.S. and other similar powders produces erratic and shorter burn duration's, thus causing extreme velocity spreads, and also that over all average velocity is lower.

I've used magnums with L.S. on occasion before, but I didn't chrony the loads, so just wondering if anyone else has knows of this.

I never heard magnum primers would cause a problem with Longshot. I do not however use magnum primers with Longshot because that powder does not require the hotter primer.

Arch, only times I've used 550's was when I didn't have any 500's on a couple of occasions. But I never noticed any difference when I did. Me thinks the guy who fed me this was getting unusual velocity losses and spreads for other reasons? This is why I asked.

I really don't know BDS, could have shot the 500's in 80 degree weather, and the 550's in minus zero temps for all I know. But that's a good point none the less, and that sure could explain erratic and decreased velocities.

I was just curious if anyone had seen anything consistent with this claim. I primarily interested because I regularly load and shoot full house 38+ P's, and I desire the most consistent results possible. So if it's a viable, or even plausible effect of using 550's with +P Longshot loads, I would like to know for future reference.

What I should do is just load 25 with 550's, then 25 with 500's, record the chrony results and see what kind, if any velocity trend might surface.

Longshot isn't going to fill the case, so he may have been getting inconsistencies due to powder position as well.

I have used some Longshot in .40, but it fills the case reasonably well there, as do most powders with 180 Gr bullets at max or near max loads. It worked well with standard primers in that application.

If it is a powder position thing, mag primers are going to cure it.

I hadn't considered the position sensitive issue Walkalong, it's certainly possible with 38 spcl. and Longshot.
