Wondering if there's any way to make the 550 auto index. I know the 650 indexes, along with the Square Deal. Wondering why the 550 doesn't, and if there's any way to upgrade??

And yeah, I know the Hornady LnL auto indexes, but I'm set with Dillon

As far as I know there is no commercial product to auto index the 550.

Try this: pull the handle with your right hand while reaching for a bullet with your left hand, index and set the bullet on the case while reaching for a case with your left hand, pull handle while reaching.......

It works for me, and auto index would not gain me any time saved. It would cost me time to have auto indexing on my 550 if it was slow enough to not spill powder from cases that were quite full.

It is also impossible. Think about it .. You decap and reprime on the same station. which means that the same case has to be in the same spot at both extremes of the movement. Thus the indexing HAS to happen on the downward section of the move. However that means that you would need to place a new case on the shellplate BEFORE you ejected the previous spent round. Sorry, you just can't do it. I'm with RUT on this one, I got it because it DOESN'T autoindex. You may want to get a 650.

You will have to upgrade to a 650 for auto indexing. It's no advantage without a case feeder.

I'll bet the 550 is the most reliable machine Dillon makes.

Well, for advanced features like auto-indexing and case feeding, you have to go with a bit more upscale press like the Loadmaster...

   Man I couldn't resist that one :D

dillion 550

the reason it wont auto index is because they didn't make it that way. sell the 550 and buy a 650, with all the buzzers whistles and bells. it will be woth it in the long run. :banghead:
